Activision has officially confirmed the name of this year’s Call of Duty. This year’s game is titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Over the past few days, the company has been running a big ARG that involved sending Call of Duty YouTubers slide projectors, which would later point them to spots on maps from Black Ops 4 and others in Warzone. Though casual players may have spotted some teasers, the hardcore were tracking ciphers and participating in a collective attempt to decode the various messages.

All of that has culminated with the unlocking of an unlisted trailer on the official Call of Duty YouTube channel, which confirms Wednesday, August 26 as the date of the official reveal. The trailer features footage from a real, 1984 interview with KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov, interspersed with footage of global unrest.

The game’s events will seemingly be inspired by real-world events more than earlier Black Ops games. The trailer briefly touches on an embedded Soviet spy codenamed Perseus, another real figure whose identity remains unknown.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will include a Zombies mode, which was detailed today by Treyarch.

In the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War four-person co-op mode DNA: Zombies, players can expect a fresh, new narrative along with a new cast of characters.

The mode includes new ways to progress, classic Perks, and Cold War weapons.

Storywise, it takes place in the early ‘80s, but its “roots reach back even further into the past.”

Here’s more:

As part of Requiem, a CIA-backed international response team led by Grigori Weaver from the original Black Ops story, operatives explore a World War II bunker that hasn’t only been ravaged by time…

While fighting to suppress the unnatural phenomena at this graffiti-skinned, boarded-up bunker, Requiem team members investigate what lies beneath this structure that’s been left to crumble after decades of disservice. Should they succeed, Requiem may uncover a cache of decades-old secrets that upend the global order.

At the same time, a Soviet-led division and rival to Requiem, the Omega Group, enters the fray. The Omega Group also has a keen interest in studying and harnessing the unexplained events and anomalies manifesting around the globe.

Between Requiem and Omega Group, there are plenty of characters who may aid or hinder your journey, while others have separate, unknown agendas that will be up to players to discover. Among this cast, there is one particular contact – Sam – who seems eager to share intel discovered from deep within the KGB.

Players can track various intel in-game, to find out more on the mode which will “unfold in mysterious and unexpected ways.

Here are just some of the updates coming to Zombies in Black Ops Cold War:
  • Cross-Play and Cross-Gen: Just like Multiplayer, squads in Zombies can be formed across platforms and generations, marking the first time in franchise history this co-op mode is available via cross-play.
  • Battle Pass Progression and Loadouts: Players will now advance through the Battle Pass with time played in Zombies, similar to Multiplayer and Call of Duty: Warzone™. Requiem team members can also start the match with their Gunsmith-crafted weapon of choice via loadout support.
  • Weapon Rarity: In addition to the return of the Pack-a-Punch machine to transform your weapon, all weapons will now have a rarity associated with them. The higher the rarity, the greater the damage output and attachments for the weapon. For the first time, this will allow any weapon in the game to be sustainable in later rounds. This also adds more variety and fun to find new weapons through Wall Buys and the Mystery Box.
  • Field Upgrades: Outside of weaponry, players can deploy Field Upgrades as proactive abilities that add another layer to squad-based tactics. Charge them up by killing zombies, then deploy them in times of desperate need. From offensive buffs to abilities that aid in evasion or healing and reviving, these Field Upgrades are made to fit numerous playstyles and situations.
  • Equipment: Around the map, you can craft and find lethal, tactical, and support equipment. Lethal and tactical equipment is similar to the equipment found in Multiplayer, like Frag Grenades, while support equipment is home to high-powered offensive weaponry. This slot could be where you deploy Grenade Launchers, Sentry Turrets, Explosive Bows, and even Chopper Gunners – all tools that can deliver a massive power spike when your squad needs it most.
  • Perks: Classic Zombies Perks are back with a reimagined Cold War aesthetic, including the return of timeless favourites like Juggernog and Speed Cola. There’s no longer a limit to how many different Perks you can consume, so go ahead and crack open a six-pack, if you have the points to do so.
  • Exfil: Instead of perishing to the horde, Black Ops Cold War Zombies provides a new option to escape with your life when you’re feeling overrun. If the whole squad is in trouble, you can opt to exfiltrate the undead combat zone via helicopter. Although zombie spawns will be dialled up to 11, you should expect to earn some rewards if your squad completes this final push to survive.
The Zombies experience is part of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War which releases on November 13.

Some more information regarding the multiplayer beta for Call of Duty 2020, Black Ops Cold War.

The beta is taking place later than usual. The coronavirus pandemic, coupled with reported development troubles meant that the game will be out later than the last two.

That, of course, means the beta, too, will itself drop later than players usually expect. PS4 players just had a go with the free alpha, and by most accounts, the content should be similar between them. Beyond maps and modes, you should expect some performance improvements and balance tweaks. Sniper rifles won’t be so dominant, for instance.

To help you make sense of the schedule and everything you can expect from the Black Ops Cold War beta, we put together this helpful guide. Read on below.

Black Ops Cold War beta schedule

As is custom with Call of Duty, the Black Ops Cold War beta takes place over two weekends, with multiple sessions within each weekend depending on whether or not you pre-ordered the full game and your platform of choice.

The general rule here is that PS4 goes first, so just keep that in mind as you go along.

Black Ops Cold War pre-order early access beta

Although the Black Ops Cold War beta will eventually go open, early access is limited to players who pre-ordered the game digitally. If your pre-order was made on the official PlayStation/Xbox Stores or Battle.net, you won’t have to do anything else. If you pre-ordered at retail, however, you won’t have access to the early access portion of the beta.

As it stands, pre-ordering a digital copy is the only guaranteed way of getting into the early access days, but Xfinity in the US and Sky in the UK are offering limited keys to subscribers and it’s worth checking those before committing to a pre-order.

The pre-order beta kicks off Thursday, October 8 on PS4. Early access on PS4 will be available all day Friday as well. On PC and Xbox One, the pre-order beta will instead kick off the following week, on Thursday, October 15, and will likewise last until Friday.

The times are all the same for every platform/weekend. Here’s when servers go live:
  • 10am PT.
  • 1pm ET.
  • 6pm UK.
  • 7pm CEST.

Black Ops Cold War open beta

On PS4, the Black Ops Cold War open beta goes live on Saturday, October 10, and remains online until Monday, October 12. Beginning Saturday, anyone with a PS4 will be able to download it and jump in, regardless of pre-order status. Pre-ordering essentially buys you two extra days.

The open beta also continues on PS4 for the following week, from Thursday, October 15 all the way until Monday, October 19. As for PC and Xbox One, their open beta first goes live on Saturday, October 17 and remains available alongside the rest until Monday, October 19.

Once again, times are all the same. See the schedule below:
  • 10am PT.
  • 1pm ET.
  • 6pm UK.
  • 7pm CEST.

Black Ops Cold War open beta pre-load

The Black Ops Cold War beta pre-load should start today on PS4, but we’re waiting to confirm the specifics.

Black Ops Cold War open beta download size

We’re still unclear as to how big the Black Ops Cold War beta download is going to be, but judging by the alpha, you’re looking at around 30GB.

Black Ops Cold War open beta content

Content across the various Black Ops Cold War weekends and platforms is identical, but that doesn’t preclude Treyarch and Raven from pushing a server-side update to unlock an extra mode or map, as is common. For now, here’s what we know for sure will be there.

Modes: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Kill Confirmed, as well as the new VIP Escort, and Combined Arms (12v12).

Maps: Activision has yet to detail the list of maps available in the beta, but we’re guessing the roster will be identical to the that of the recent alpha. Expect Satellite, Miami and Moscow for 6v6, and Armada and Crossroads for 12v12.

Other content: This is a Call of Duty game, after all, so you’ll have an assortment of weapons, field upgrades, perks, lethals and tacticals to unlock and pick from. You’ll also get to play as one of several operators, just like Modern Warfare.

Black Ops Cold War open beta cross-play

The Black Ops Cold War beta does indeed support cross-play (PC-PS4-Xbox One), but that’s only going to be available when the beta is live on more than a single platform, for obvious reasons. In other words, you won’t be able to invite friends on other platforms until their own betas go live (see above for details).

Three-way cross-play between PC, PS4 and Xbox One won’t be possible until the second weekend of the beta: October 15-19, though you will still need to respect the aforementioned early access/open beta restrictions.

Black Ops Cold War open beta PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold requirement

All of the various Black Ops Cold War beta weekends do not require PlayStation Plus on PS4, but they do require Xbox Live Gold on Xbox One. On PC, you just need a Battle.net account.

We are just one day away from the big Season One launch in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Treyarch has rolled out a new update for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. This is the first of two patches designed to deliver Season One content. The next patch arrives later today in Warzone with the kick off of Season One.

This first update is available only for Black Ops Cold War owners, at a download size between 3.4GB to 7.1GB. Warzone players (free-to-play and otherwise) should be ready for a bigger update later today with the launch of Season One at 11pm PT, 2am ET (tomorrow), 7am UK (tomorrow).

Treyarch also didn’t offer a full set of patch notes for today’s update, and elected to just reveal the highlight changes. A more detailed change log will follow later today.

Included in this update is a big weapon balance pass, likely in connection to Warzone. Perks have also been tuned, particularly Flak Jacket, which now passes more damage onto the player.

You can also expect more spawn logic tuning, fixes for Zombies, PC stability and more.

Season One kicks off tomorrow in most parts of the world. It brings a new map to Warzone, themed after Black Ops 4’s Alcatraz, and adds a tonne of content to Black Ops Cold War multiplayer, including new maps and modes. The season also kicks off the game’s first Battle Pass, with 100 items up for grabs, including two weapons earnable for free.

Treyarch and Activision have released a gameplay trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season Two which starts on February 25.

Season Two of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War finds Adler being taken hostage, and you will head to Southeast Asia for a rescue mission and to stop Naga from distributing Nova 6 gas.

With the season comes four new maps, new weapons, and more including the Zombies Outbreak experience. Interconnected with the Dark Aether storyline, Outbreak tasks you with objective-based play across the largest multiplayer maps in Black Ops Cold War. You will hunt down elite enemies using a satellite tracker, escort a Rover that detects dimensional portals, and battle it out against zombies in the Dark Aether regions.

There are new abilities and upgrades such as the Frenzied Guard Field Upgrade. This will force all undead creatures to attack the user for 10 seconds – and only Armor will take damage during this time. You can also use explosive Shatter Blast Ammo Mod against Heavy Zombies and earn the new Refined and Flawless Aetherium Crystals to upgrade your Skills to Tier 4 and 5.

Season Two also brings six new weapons to the game: FARA 83 (free at Tier 15), LC10 (free at Tier 31), R1 Shadowhunter, Machete, bolt-action ZRG 20mm sniper rifle, and the military tri-fold shovel E-Tool.

During launch week, the 6v6 Apocalypse map built will launch. In season maps include the multi-team second map, Golova set on the Russian Ural Plains, the 2v2/3v3 map Mansion set in Havan at the Hefe Mansion, and 6v6 Miami Strike which is a daytime rendition of the original map.

The season also offers new game modes, like Gun Game, Stockpile, and the new squad-based, multi-team Hardpoint.

Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 will get the Onslaught map Apocalypse as an exclusive. Here, you will slay zombies and feed the Dark Aether Orb as it moves through the Ural Plains.

A new loot pool is also headed to Warzone with Season Two. This includes new weapons and Operators, new game modes, and two new points of interest in Verdansk.

In Exfiltration, you will need to find a portable radio within Verdansk and hold onto it for a set period of time to win the game. The player holding the radio is marked on the Tac Map with a timer. Then there’s Rebirth Island Resurgence Extreme, a limited-time mode supporting up to 90 players.

Finally, the Season Two Battle Pass will come with four new playable Operators — Naga, Maxis, Wolf, and Rivas — new prestige levels, the Death Machine Scorestreak, Outbreak vehicles, a new set of multiplayer and Zombies challenges, and more.
