On February 18, 2021 at 20:55 UTC, the Perseverance rover touched down on the surface of Mars.

The flight down was successful and, by all accounts, picture-perfect. The rover landed in the 50-kilometer-wide Jezero crater, within about a kilometer of the "bull's-eye" targeted.

The first proper pictures have been released. Just remarkable

The skycrane is an incredibly impressive feat of 21st Century engineering. It is very cutting edge - and has a futuristic vibe to it like robotic vacuum cleaners, lawnmowers, self drive cars etc.

The fact that it has performed flawlessly twice in a row on Mars is a testament to the engineers who designed and built the thing. The Americans have got very good at successfully putting hardware on Mars.

Perseverance has successfully conducted its first test drive on the Red Planet, the US space agency NASA said on Friday.

The six-wheeled rover travelled about 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in 33 minutes on Thursday, NASA said. It drove four meters forward, turned in place 150 degrees to the left, and then backed up 2.5 meters, leaving tyre tracks in the Martian dust.
