The Night Agent. Political thriller drama based on a book by Matthew Quirk in the works from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan.

Shawn Ryan is adapting for television the 2020 novel The Night Agent by Matthew Quirk. The Shield creator revealed the project last night as part of a series of tweets about some the favourite books he read in 2020.

He listed The Night Agent in the category of “Books I read, Decided To Adapt For Television And May Have Already Finished Writing The Pilot Episode.”

I hear Ryan wrote the pilot script on spec at Sony Pictures TV where he is under an exclusive overall deal. The project is believed to be still in internal development and will be taken out in the new year. Ryan is executive producing via his MiddKid Productions, with the company’s Marney Hochman also expected to exec produce.

Published in October to strong reviews, Quirk’s The Night Agent has drawn comparisons to the early novels of John Grisham and David Baldacci. It centers on FBI Agent Peter Sutherland who is thrown into a vast conspiracy and must stop a Russian mole at the highest levels of the US government. To save the nation, Peter plunges into a desperate hunt for the traitor and must take the rules into his own hands, question everything, and trust no one.

We Own This City

We hear that the latest HBO project from The Wire’s EP David Simon and producer George Pelecanos is finally coming together with the premium network recently quietly greenlighting the project and casting already underway. The duo are working on a limited series based on the Random House book We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption by investigative journalist Justin Fenton.

Simon and Pelecanos are writing and executive producing We Own the City.

Pelecanos told us back in October 2019 during The Deuce series finale, that their “next project is set in Baltimore, a miniseries for HBO. We rounded up the old (writing) crew from The Wire” and that the new show wasn’t a spinoff of that two-time Emmy-nominated series.

We Own the City is set in Baltimore 2015. Riots are erupting across the city as citizens demand justice for Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old Black man who has died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody. Drug and violent crime are surging, and the city is reaching its highest murder count in more than two decades: 342 homicides in a single year, in a city of just 600,000 people. Facing pressure from the mayor’s office—as well as a federal investigation of the department over Gray’s death—Baltimore police commanders turn to a rank-and-file hero, Sergeant Wayne Jenkins, and his elite plainclothes unit, the Gun Trace Task Force, to help get guns and drugs off the street.

Steven Spielberg bringing Stephen King’s The Talisman to Netflix in collaboration with Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers

Steven Spielberg is teaming with Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers to bring Stephen King and Peter Straub’s fantasy epic, The Talisman, to Netflix as a series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deals are still being finalized and in negotiations.

For nearly 40 years, Spielberg has owned the rights to an adaptation of the nearly 1,000-page novel and long expressed a desire to bring it to the screen. “I feel that in the very near future, that’s going to be our richest collaboration,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “Universal bought the book for me, so it wasn’t optioned. It was an outright sale of the book. I’ve owned the book since ’82, and I’m hoping to get this movie made in the next couple of years. I’m not committing to the project as a director, I’m just saying that it’s something that I’ve wanted to see come to theaters for the last 35 years.”

While Netflix’s adaptation doesn’t quite fit Spielberg’s original vision, the filmmaker will undoubtedly pleased with the talent involved in bringing the series to fruition. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stranger Things executive producer and writer Curtis Gwinn will act as the showrunner and writer for the series. Matt and Ross Duffer will executive produce via their Monkey Massacre Productions while Spielberg executive produces via Amblin Television along with partners Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. King and Paramount Television will also executive produce.

Steven Spielberg bringing Stephen King’s The Talisman to Netflix in collaboration with Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers
Spielberg and The Talisman is one of those Hollywood sagas that just seems to be neverending. Hopefully it finally happens this time. Wonder if he bought or optioned the sequel, Black House, yet. That would add a few seasons, I imagine, if they needed more.

Ginger Snaps TV Series In Works From ‘Killing Eve’ Producer Sid Gentle Films With John Fawcett As Executive Producer
Interesting. Never watched the movies but heard good things about them from the horror community. Werewolves aren't really my thing. I'm more into vampires.

My most anticipated series is Netflix's The Sandman, adapted from the classic fantasy comic-graphic novel series by Neil Gaiman. Casting has been pretty good so far and Gaiman is onboard as an executive producer and writer (though I think he's only writing the pilot or something).
