Underrated Films You Like That Others Think Are Rubbish Movie Chat

The post presents an interesting perspective but lacks clear organization and depth. It could benefit from more examples and a structured argument to better engage the community.

There is a whole host of underrated films that people tend to palm off as being rubbish but I tend to disagree with and think they are decent movies. One that comes to mind is Airheads (1994).

People went mad about Wayne's World back then, watch it now - bloody hell, best of luck getting to the end. The sequel is dire stuff too.

Airheads, while it's similar and to be fair, arguably a copy of Waynes World, early-mid '90s nonsense, it has something about it. It features, Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Brendan Fraser, Cosmo Kramer, Fat Tony/that bloke from Criminal Minds/Chuck McGill...and MORE! (well maybe one or two more).

What underrated films do you like that people seem to think are rubbish?

The Counsellor - 2013

Great cast (Javier Bardem, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, Natalie Dormer). Stylish and sexy, some great dialogue (script by Cormac McCarthy) and a great morality play. Cameron Diaz is great in it. The extended cut version is even better.

The Cable Guy.So dark. A brilliant movie.

Limitless. Got sloppy reviews, I thought it was brilliant

Ironclad which stars James Purefoy, Paul Giamatti, Derek Jacobi and Lars Kulich. I thought it was a great medieval action movie, loosely based on the siege of Rochester Castle.

Hudson Hawk

Hilariously funny and the best Bruce Willis movie after Die Hard.

About A Boy. People will usually write off anything with Hugh Grant but he is great in this film. Good story as well.

The Adventures of Buckaroom Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. Great little cult movie that definitely doesn't appeal to everyone. Sadly (but not surprisingly) the sequel they reference in the end credits never got made.

Best Collaborator
"Birdy", one of the first movies with Nicolas Cage (and Matthew Modine). A Lot of people will probably find Cage uninspiring now, but I remember it as a great movie (last seen it 15 years ago, should probably give it a rewatch)

Birdy is a great movie and a great book adaption - the novel by Wharton is great, as is "A Midnight Clear"

Other underrated movies I can think of:

"Figures In A Landscape" (Losey) two men chained together on the run from a helicopter. A bit like Spielberg's "Duel" very intense.

"Strange Days" (Kathryn Bigelow) really one of the best Sci-fi films of the 90s.

Uncut Gems.

Not an Adam Sandler fan at all. When I saw he decided to make a serious movie I wasn't shocked as I think his career needed a jolt. Read initial lukewarm reception but my friend swore by it so finally decided to watch it.

Was actually at the edge of my seat for most of the movie. Real tense movie and have to say, Sandler was terrific.
