Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has criticised the club's hierarchy after the 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid, saying more investment was needed after qualification for the Champions League.

United have now gone five games without a win, with their most recent victory coming against Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK on 10 September. Their only other win in nine matches this season came against newly promoted Ipswich at Old Trafford, when they had to come from behind.

Martinez said United had done "a fantastic season last season" but added: "Now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well."

He added: "I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]. I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night."

Martinez also said: "Tonight it is easy to [blame] the coach, easy to say the players but also we have to see other areas."

United finished third in the Premier League last season to secure a Champions League return for the first time in three years. They won 12 of Michael Carrick's 17 games in interim charge after Ruben Amorim was dismissed in January, enough for Carrick to be given a permanent two-year contract as head coach.

The defender's comments came after United spent £155m on three midfielders in the summer without strengthening other positions. The failure to bring in striking support for Benjamin Sesko and competition at left-back for Luke Shaw has also been highlighted.

Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and chief executive Omar Berrada were both at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday. United have sacked managers in the past two seasons after backing them the previous summer, with Erik ten Hag dismissed in October 2024 and Amorim leaving in January 2026.

Former United players Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young said Martinez had gone too far.

Rooney said: "Something like that will rip that dressing room apart." He added that it was "disrespectful to his team-mates" and said: "Bruno [Fernandes] is the only one with any right to say that."

Young said: "We know recruitment has to work and be better but players have to be better. They are the ones who have to produce."

He's not wrong in what he said but he is wrong for airing it live in a interview. Should have been kept in the dressing room.

This will pile more pressure on Carrick too.

Martinez has apologised for criticising Manchester United's hierarchy and said he held a "very positive" meeting with Michael Carrick and the club's leadership.

The centre-back met with senior club figures on Thursday following his public criticism of the club's investment.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has said the club have moved on from Martinez's post-match comments and insisted the squad are not affected by the fallout.

Carrick said he was "telling the truth" when he described the dressing room as being in a strong place, despite criticism of Martinez from Wayne Rooney, Roy Keane and Gary Neville after the defender's remarks following the 2-0 Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid.

"There's a lot of people who say a lot of things - ex-pros or not ex-pros - it doesn't necessarily mean they understand what is going on here," Carrick said at his pre-match media conference at United's Carrington training ground.

"Just because people talk on the outside doesn't mean that is the truth. I am telling you the truth. The squad today was in a fantastic place, better than I have seen it for a while. That is it, plain and simple."

Martinez has apologised for the timing of his comments, which focused attention on director of football Jason Wilcox, but not for the words themselves. Carrick confirmed Martinez would be "part of the squad" for Sunday's Premier League trip to Leeds at Elland Road.

Asked whether Wilcox should explain his actions to the media, Carrick said: "I don't think it's for me to say whether he should or not. I've got no problem sitting here, talking to you guys and leading the group, leading the team, leading the football club from this position. We're all in it together."

Carrick said Martinez's statement was enough for the team to move on.

"He's released his statement, he's realised he's made a mistake, and I think that's enough for all of us to move on with," he said. "We ask for passion, we ask for emotion, we ask for fire and we ask for players to care. There's a way of doing that, and that's already been acknowledged."

United go to Leeds on the back of a five-match winless run, and Carrick said the club needed results rather than focusing on his own position.

"I don't need results. We all need results," he said. "It's not about me. Manchester United is a lot bigger than any individual. It is bigger than me, bigger than any player, or anyone else who works at this football club."

Do you think it is naive to think there is no lifeforms on other planets similar to humans? If there is lifeforms, would they have the same type of life cycle and a life expectancy like humans?
Chatai

I think people sometimes jump from the enormous size of the universe to the conclusion that intelligent life must be common. The size of the universe...

Yes, that's the sensible position, really. The universe being huge only tells us there's room for life; it doesn't tell us how often life actually starts. That's the bit people like to quietly skip over because "big universe" sounds so reassuringly persuasive.

With only one confirmed data point, we're basically guessing in the dark. Earth could be:
  • a fairly typical example
  • a rare but not unique case
  • an extremely lucky accident

And each of those leads to wildly different conclusions.

I think optimism is fair, but certainty isn't. We can say the ingredients for life exist in lots of places, and we know the chemistry of life isn't magic. But whether those ingredients usually assemble into something alive is still an open question.

Until we have more than one example, the honest answer is just: we don't know yet. Which is a bit frustrating, but also part of what makes it such a good subject to talk about.

Totally agree Random Guy Random Guy, I agree that we shouldn't treat the existence of other life as a certainty, but, I think even discovering simple microbial life on Mars or beneath the icy surface of one of Jupiter's moons would be a massive breakthrough.

It would tell us that life can exist somewhere beyond Earth.

Totally agree Random Guy, I agree that we shouldn't treat the existence of other life as a certainty, but, I think even discovering simple microbial...

Absolutely, and that would be enormous on its own.

Even microbial life would completely change the conversation. It wouldn't just be "we found some alien germs," it would mean life has managed to start more than once in the universe. That's a huge clue, because it would tell us Earth is not the only place where chemistry crossed that mysterious line into biology.

And honestly, that might be the most important discovery of all at first. We tend to get drawn to the flashy version, the intelligent species, the spacefaring civilisation, the dramatic first contact kind of stuff. But even a tiny fossilized microbe on Mars would be a profound result.

It would suggest that life may be less of a cosmic fluke than we fear, even if complex life remains rare. That alone would reshape everything from biology to philosophy, and probably lead to a lot of very excited scientists losing sleep for several years.

Valor Mortis is out now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, with day-one access on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

The first-person action game from One More Level casts players as William, a soldier of the Grande Armée who returns from the dead to find Europe consumed by a grotesque plague.

Set in a twisted 19th-century Europe, the game sends William across ravaged battlefields, mountains and historic cities overrun by corruption. Napoleon's disembodied voice guides him as he searches for the truth behind the outbreak and his own resurrection.

Combat is stamina-based and built around timing, with parries, evasive dashes and finishers playing a central role. William can use rapiers, flintlock pistols and supernatural abilities against the plague-ridden Eternal Guard and other enemies.

Death is part of the progression, with each failed attempt intended to help players learn enemy patterns and improve their use of William's powers. His corruption can also be developed into new supernatural abilities and enhanced attacks.

Alongside combat, Valor Mortis includes Metroidvania-style exploration, with William's mobility opening up new areas and hidden secrets. The game's atmosphere is shaped by theatrical lighting and grim visual design, with an original soundtrack co-composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski and in-house composer Oskar Bała.

Valor Mortis is priced at £34.99. A Deluxe Edition costs £51.99 and includes the base game, the La Grande Armée Weapon Skin Pack, Major Story DLC, and three further weapon skin packs scheduled for 2026 and 2027.

Everton owners The Friedkin Group are exploring a sale of the club less than two years after taking control.

The American group completed its takeover in 2024 in a deal believed to be worth more than £400m.

In a statement, TFG said that after prioritising stability, investment and the opening of Everton's new stadium last year, the time is right "to consider the next chapter".

"The Friedkin Group is exploring new investment options for Everton Football Club, including the potential sale of a controlling interest," the statement said.

"When TFG became custodians of Everton, the club faced significant financial uncertainty and challenges both on and off the pitch. The immediate priority was to provide the stability, investment and support needed to secure the club's future, including helping to bring the long-promised stadium to completion for its deserving supporters.

"With that foundation now safely in place, the time is right to consider the next chapter for Everton."

TFG, led by chairman Dan Friedkin, said it would only "entertain interest from parties who we strongly believe will be the right stewards to take the club forward".

"Throughout this process, TFG's focus will remain unchanged. We will support the club in all ways necessary to achieve success on the pitch and will continue efforts to make a positive difference in the communities the club serves," the statement added.

The move comes after scrutiny of TFG's leadership during the summer transfer window.

In September, David Moyes said he had never met or spoken to Friedkin, who is based in Houston, since returning as manager in January 2025.

Friedkin leaves the day-to-day running of the club to his son-in-law Rishi Majithia, who works alongside chief executive Angus Kinnear.

Fans reacted angrily when Everton accepted a £40m bid from Nottingham Forest for England Under-19 midfielder Harrison Armstrong.

Everton later pulled out of the deal, but supporters remained frustrated when Beto moved to Fiorentina shortly afterwards.

The move left the Toffees with just one recognisable striker in 23-year-old Frenchman Thierno Barry.

The decision to explore a sale came as no great surprise after recent events. A fracture had opened up between TFG and Everton's fanbase over the attempted sale of Armstrong late in the transfer window, before a botched deadline day left Moyes with only 18 senior outfield players. The failed sale of Armstrong, along with Iliman Ndiaye's £65m move to Manchester City, sat alongside a cautious approach to the market that suggested limited ambition.

Moyes revealing he had never spoken to Friedkin, who has not attended an Everton game since the Scot was reappointed as manager 21 months ago, strengthened the belief among supporters that TFG were effectively absentee owners.

TFG secured a deal for 99.5% of the club, succeeding former owner Farhad Moshiri in 2024 after Everton had fallen into financial crisis.

Since then, TFG have put the club on a stable financial footing, and Everton have moved into a new stadium, although this was effectively done before their takeover, making the club an attractive proposition to potential buyers.

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after successful surgery to remove part of his right lung, the Vatican has said.

The 71-year-old underwent a 90-minute operation on Tuesday at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, where surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung. The Vatican said the operation was successful and there were no complications.

After the surgery, the Pope awoke normally and returned to his room after a brief period of observation, the Vatican said. He is expected to remain in hospital for about a week.

The lump was first detected during what the Vatican described as routine checks. It said the whole lower lobe of the Pope's right lung was removed "to ensure the procedure was radical".

The medical team later confirmed the growth was pulmonary adenocarcinoma, "as suspected by pre-operative tests", the Vatican said. A Vatican source told Agence France-Presse that further tests were being carried out to see whether the cancer had spread.

Earlier on Tuesday, large crowds waited outside the hospital for the Pope. He waved and smiled back through the lowered back window of his car as people cheered greetings and well wishes. He was then met by staff on the hospital steps.

The Pope had announced news of the operation on Sunday from the balcony in St Peter's Square after delivering the traditional Angelus blessing. He said the nodule on his lung was "contained" and had been found "at a very early stage", but that doctors had advised him to have it removed.

Gemelli's thoracic surgery team carried out the operation. The Pope's schedule has already been cleared until 20 October to allow time for recovery.

The Vatican said the pontiff had no symptoms of infection or illness. Cardinal Kikuchi Tarcisio Isao of Tokyo said on social media that he had met Pope Leo on Monday and that the pontiff felt "nothing wrong" physically.

Cardinal Parolin said the news had been like a "bolt from the blue", but added that the cardinals had been struck by the Pope's "serenity" and were confident in his recovery.

PhotoCraft is an open-source image editor laid out like Photoshop: layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors and brushes, and it opens and saves layered PSD files. The README's own line is "If you know Photoshop, you already know PhotoCraft." The screenshot below is the maker's demo, The Great Wave with type layers and Vibrance and Curves adjustments stacked on top.

1792183485118.webp

It also comes with a command line, an MCP server for AI agents, and a web build, so an agent can edit images through it too.

The ArtCraft team behind it released seven Adobe-style apps at once: PhotoCraft (Photoshop), LightCraft (Lightroom), FilmCraft (Premiere Pro), PdfCraft (Acrobat), VectorCraft (Illustrator), plus EffectCraft for motion graphics and DesignCraft for page layout.

1792183663683.webp

Who it's for:
  • Anyone who needs to open or tweak a PSD and doesn't want a subscription for it.
  • People who learned Photoshop and want the same layout and shortcuts in a free app.
  • Builders who want an AI agent to edit images. The CLI and MCP server make that possible.
It's free. PhotoCraft's own page lists it as "Free · Open source", and getartcraft.com says "No subscription required."

How to install it

Download it from getartcraft.com/apps/photocraft. There are builds for Mac, Windows, Linux and the web. To build it yourself:

Code:
git clone https://github.com/storytold/photocraft
cd photocraft
cargo run --release -p photocraft -- image.psd

The README calls it an "early alpha" and "not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work." It was built fast with heavy AI help, so expect rough edges and frequent updates. Its claim to be a "clean-room" rebuild is disputed. The team says no Adobe code was copied and the work comes from public specs, and people have questioned what clean-room means when an AI model wrote much of the code.
