Manchester City financial breaches Premier League punishment cheating

The thread kicks off with news of Manchester City's guilty verdict in a financial misconduct case. Charges mostly span from 2009 to 2018, igniting intense discussions about the possible consequences the club may face. The community is stirred, with reactions ranging from shock to indignation over the scale of the alleged cheating.12

As more details emerge, users speculate on sanctions, with many calling for severe penalties like point deductions and financial fines. Arguments about the integrity of football surface, highlighting the disparity created by financial misconduct. There's a sense of division—while some demand harsh repercussions, others express concern about the broader implications for English football.34

In the latter part of the debate, users express disbelief at the club's continued assertion of innocence despite mounting evidence. Opinions vary on whether the punishment will match the gravity of the offenses, with calls for accountability echoing strongly. The overall sentiment reflects a belief that this case could set a pivotal precedent for the future of football governance.56

"£900m hidden is just ridiculous. They have absolutely cheated teams out of trophies."

Verdict

The discussion leaves many unresolved questions about the future of Manchester City and the potential ramifications for the Premier League. Clear consensus on the need for accountability persists, but the path forward remains uncertain.

Some of the reading is absolutely damning. Shocking levels of pure cheating and attempts to conceal and failure to comply. The most significant decision in PL history as the statement notes. Will no doubt change the PL massively in the long term.

It's clear that we've seen nothing but legitimate doping and corruption by the most successful PL side in the last 15 years.

Doesn't get much more definitive than calling your sponsorship arrangements a 'sham'.

Seems like those at the top of Man City acted like they were above the law, unto themselves. Not surprising, perhaps, when their owner is an autocrat.

They are completely fucked.

If they had sense, they'd try to work with the Premier League. They won't; instead, they will try to destroy the entire league through legal action. Their owners will also apply pressure on the UK government.

Given the scale of the fraud, they should be booted to League 2

If this were a criminal investigation, there would now be people on charges of fraud, false accounting, perjury, and the list goes on.

I was a bit on the fence about how much to punish them, to be honest, mainly because I didn't appreciate how serious each charge was individually, and it was just 114.

But £900m hidden is just ridiculous. They have absolutely cheated teams out of trophies, there is no doubt.

I can't believe that their owners are still protesting their innocence.

They've had over three years to present this 'irrefutable' evidence that will clear them.

They now have until Friday to appeal. (October 2 2026)

I reckon the people who just said "relegation to the championship" will have changed their tune now given the severity of the claims? Interesting if anyone who thought that still thinks it's acceptable.

Until today, a part of me was wondering if the reason City had been acting so defiantly since the news leaked was that maybe they actually did have some compelling evidence in their favour that they were confident in.

Now I think it's clear they're just going all in on the most desperate play possible because they're totally buggered regardless, so they might as well.

That is almost the worst bit about it for me.
