The Substance (2024) Movie Thread

This is apparently one of the best reviewed horror films of the year.

We walked out about halfway through.

Demi Moore is just stunning, as is Margaret Qualley. Dennis Quaid is absolutely grotesque and the end is mental.

I love a bit of body horror but this just didn't seem to work, in loads of ways, for me or Eily.

Loads of other people have said they enjoyed it so maybe it was just us

I saw this last night and thought it was one of the worst films I've ever seen. The plot was weak and made no sense at all.

The gore and violence were completely over the top and disgusting, that may be "the point" but I found it revolting and I don't think it was anything more than immature shock tactics.

It lost its way completely toward the end and should have been cut short at least 30 mins before it ended. I'd have left early if I wasn't there with a friend.

I saw it this last night.

I thought Demi Moore was absolutely brilliant in this and ironically looked amazing. I haven't seen a horror movie in years, to be honest, and I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of the movie. I didn't think it was too grotesque at all. The final third was absolutely unnecessary and it was almost like a different writer/director took over.

Interesting concept, compelling first two-thirds of the film, and good performances from the lead actors. The final third of the movie just turned into increasingly gratuitous schlock horror nonsense, so it ended up a bit of a disappointment.

It really could have done with having 20-30 minutes lopped off it towards the end. That said, it's excellent. I'm glad I caught this before it left cinemas. I was surprised at the amount of nudity in it but it's a very well put together film although it starts to fall apart at the end.

I'm pretty sure around 5 people left the cinema during the last 30 minutes.

Very enjoyable movie until the last 20 minutes. It does somewhat redeem itself with the final scene before the credits, which I really liked.

Dennis Quaid is great and may be the grossest thing in it.
