The post provides a heartfelt tribute to the troops involved in D-Day, but it could benefit from more detailed historical context and insights to enhance its educational value.

Operation Neptune was launched on Tuesday 6th June 1944. It was the biggest seabourn invasion in history and began the liberation of France and ultimately the victory in World War 2.

It is impossible to imagine how all those lads felt waiting to parachute into France or leave a landing craft to assault a beach.

Real heroes, British, Canadian and American troops. We will be forever in their debt.

We will remember them.

One of history's most defining days June 06th 1944. Imagine how the people of the occupied countries in western europe felt when they heard that the Western Allies had landed after 4 years of occupation by German forces?

June was a bad month for Hitler and the German forces as the Russians launched a massive land offensive a couple of weeks later which inflicted massive damage to the German forces in the east, Apparently it was supposed to be launched on the same day but Stalin delayed it a couple of weeks so he could be sure that the western allies had gained a foothold in France.

I went to the 75th anniversary in Normandy back in 2019 with my son - an absolutely moving experience with so many veterans marching through Arromanches. Two veterans were on our trip and we stayed friends for life. They are sadly no longer with us.

Janey Rising Star
A golden generation of men and women who stood up to the evils of the world. Truly awful yet one of the great events to read or watch about, amazing what they achieved.

Watched "My Grandad's War" with Vicky McClure and her Grandad on STV/ITV a few nights ago.

I was in a flood of tears.

Definitely worth watching on STV/ITV Player if you get the chance.
