Food Adventures: Expectations vs Reality Food & Recipes

Gemma Mentor
Travelling to foreign countries often presents us with a unique opportunity to explore new cultures, and one of the most significant aspects of that culture is its food. However, not everyone is prepared for the culinary differences they may encounter.

The Story

Recently, a family member shared an experience about a friend who travelled to Greece and refused to eat the local cuisine, claiming it was "covered in oil and herbs and shit." This comment reflects a common expectation that travellers might have: a desire for familiar food rather than embracing local flavours. This person's aversion has led them to vow never to return to Greece, which raises a question about how we approach food when abroad.

Discussion Points
  • What are some of the funniest or most surprising reactions you've had to foreign food?
  • Have you ever refused to try local dishes? Why?
  • How important is it to embrace local cuisine when travelling?
  • Can travelling with an open mind to food enhance the overall experience of a destination?
Travelling to foreign countries offers a rich opportunity to immerse oneself in different cultures, and one of the most immediate and enjoyable ways to do that is through food. Local cuisine is often a reflection of a region's history, geography, climate, and traditions. Yet, for some travellers, the unfamiliarity of foreign food can be off-putting rather than inviting.

Every culture has its own unique approach to ingredients, preparation, seasoning, and presentation. From fragrant street food stalls in Southeast Asia to rich, herb-infused dishes of the Mediterranean, culinary traditions offer insights into the daily lives and values of local communities. However, not every traveller arrives prepared, or willing, to sample these offerings.

Some people shy away from local dishes due to dietary restrictions, allergies, or concerns about food safety. Others may simply prefer the familiarity of food they know and understand. While this is perfectly valid, it can also mean missing out on one of the most engaging and memorable parts of travel.

Food has the power to connect people, bridge cultural gaps, and offer stories that last well beyond the trip. Trying local cuisine doesn't necessarily mean loving everything - it means being open to the experience, even if the outcome is surprising or amusing. In fact, many travellers find that some of their most memorable moments abroad come from unexpected meals.

Conclusion

Understanding and appreciating local cuisine can be a rich part of the travel experience. Let's share our thoughts and stories about food in foreign countries!

One of the best things about Greece is the food! I mean, have you tried moussaka or grilled octopus? Herbs are half the charm :)

Some people feel overwhelmed by change. That said, food is such a core part of the culture, it's a shame to miss it.

I've struggled a few times to find vegan-friendly eateries, but if you're spending money to go abroad, at least TRY something local. You might discover something amazing.

I once tried durian in Thailand. Smelled like a bin fire, tasted like custard and onions. Would I eat it again? Probably not. Do I regret it? Nope.

To be fair, Western food is everywhere now. You can get burgers in Bali. But it's a missed opportunity if that's all you eat.

Greek food is one of the healthiest out there. Olive oil, herbs, grilled meats. That guy missed out big time.

I think there's something magical about sharing a meal with locals. It breaks down barriers.
