A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area has been arrested after a car collided with several pedestrians on Water Street, just after 6pm on Monday, 27th May. Police say he is believed to have been the driver of the vehicle. The incident happened on Water Street in the city centre, where thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate the club's title win.

Police detained the driver at the scene. He remains in custody while an investigation is carried out to determine the circumstances.

Twenty-seven people were taken to the hospital in total, the ambulance service said. Of those, one adult and one child were seriously injured. Another 20 were treated at the scene, including four children.

When emergency services arrived at the scene, four people were trapped under the vehicle, including one child, the fire service said. The vehicle was rapidly removed so the injured could receive treatment.

An eyewitness said the collision happened about 10 minutes after the bus carrying the Liverpool FC team had passed by. He described grabbing his daughter and diving out the way.

Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that a man has been arrested following a road traffic collision during the Liverpool FC parade. Officers remain at the scene and enquiries are ongoing.

Awful news, I've no words. I hope everyone makes a full and speedy recovery.

Terrible thing to happen on what was supposed to be a day of celebration.

I hope there are no fatalities or serious injuries, but the people caught up in it, especially any children, will be traumatised for life.

Absolute tragedy. It's upsetting that someone chooses to do this on a day people are coming together celebrating with family and friends.

No idea how this has happened, but that will be determined in due course.

What a tragedy, it is a miracle that there have been no fatalities, although two people, including a child, are in a serious condition.

Absolutely tragic that such a joyous event can turn into a horrific scene.

Police say, a 53-year-old man from West Derby has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs.

They believe the driver of the car was able to access the road after following an ambulance that was attending to a member of the public who was having a suspected heart attack.

Access on Water Street, which was blocked, was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to that individual.
