Overview:
"This Is the Sea", released in September 1985, is the third The Waterboys album, and the last of their "Big Music" albums. Considered by critics to be the finest album of their early rock-oriented sound, described as "epic" and "a defining moment", it was the first Waterboys album to enter the United Kingdom charts, peaking at number thirty-seven. Steve Wickham makes his Waterboys recording debut playing violin on 'The Pan Within' and subsequently joined the band, appearing on the video of "The Whole Of The Moon". This Is the Sea is the last album with contributions from Karl Wallinger, who left the group to form his own band, World Party.
Mike Scott, the album's principal songwriter and leader of The Waterboys, describes This Is the Sea as "the record on which I achieved all my youthful musical ambitions","the final, fully realised expression of the early Waterboys sound", influenced by The Velvet Underground, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, and Steve Reich. The album was recorded between March and July 1985, and released that October (see 1985 in music). A remastered and expanded version was released in 2004. This Is the Sea contains the best-selling Waterboys single, the song "The Whole of the Moon".

Been listening to the extended version of this quite a lot lately.

It really is a good album. Love the first track the most, "Don't Bang the Drum". The most popular and familiar song that most people will have heard before is obviously The Whole of the Moon.

Oh, and on the extended version, "Sleek White Schooner" sounds like a Springsteen song with the Rosalita-like sounding sax intro until the vocals come in.

Until recently, I'd only heard 3 Waterboys songs:-
  • Fisherman's Blues
  • The Whole of the Moon
  • The Return of Pan
Given that I think all of the above are excellent, I don't know why I haven't listened to any of their albums before.

Anyway, I've had a first listen to this on Spotify and it's very good.

I do like this album, but my own favourite of theirs (his) would be A Pagan Place.

I remember first hearing the title track, along with Red Army Blues, and being transfixed and moved in equal measure.

On this album, "Don't Bang The Drum" and "The Whole of the Moon" are the stand out tracks

It's certainly not a bad album, there's plenty of good tracks on there and they are a good band.

"This is the Sea" is my favourite track on this album but overall this album is just not for me.

I remember first hearing the title track, along with Red Army Blues, and being transfixed and moved in equal measure.

Red Army Blues is my favourite Waterboys song.
