I'm reading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas for the first time. Classic adventure set during the Napoleonic era in France. It's a big book and I'm halfway through but enjoying it so far.

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.

Written 60 years ago and sadly still relevant.

Just starting "The Confession" by Jo Spain. I love all her books.

The Storyteller, Dave Grohl. I'm a sucker for a good music bio and he is, in fact, quite a good, likeable storyteller

Leonardo da Vinci: Flights of the Mind by Charles Nicholl

Lively, beautifully written biography, full of fascinating quirky details

Back to the 1970s for me with Firefox by Craig Thomas. A cold war classic about the plot to steal the Soviet Union's latest and greatest fighter jet that is invisible to radar and has a thought-guided weapons system. The British MI6 and American CIA hatch a plot to smuggle a pilot into the USSR and steal the plane as it undergoes its final trials. The pilot is aided by the underground and by some of the Jewish scientists who are working on the project and all who are willing to die to see the mission accomplished. However, the only man that can fly the jet is a burned-out American veteran with mental issues and a weak stomach for fighting. The book is pretty tense and a good page-turner. If you like techno-thrillers, this vintage piece is well worth a read.

At the moment I'm reading Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay by Elena Ferrante and once again she is absolutely blowing my mind. Her novels are so readable, but so textured and evocative and filled with such depths. How she manages to pull off being so hypnotic, even easy to read and yet also while being so totally uncompromising and brutally frank is astounding.

Finished Irvine Welsh's The Blade Artist. I really enjoyed this side story focused on Begbie from his Trainspotting books.

It rekindled my interest in Welsh's books I have to say. Also leads nicely into Dead Man's Trousers, the Trainspotting/Porno third book. Also worth a read.

A Suspension of Mercy - Patricia Highsmith

Enjoyed it a good deal, though it's one of those novels where you wonder whether you're supposed to empathise with anyone at all in the story. (So, typical Highsmith in that regard.)
