Must be one of the best, if not the greatest, war films ever?

Is it based on a true story?

Not a true story but from a novel by Alistair McLean who also wrote the novels Ice Station Zebra and Where Eagles Dare.

People harp on about Where Eagles Dare but I think this is a better film.

Battle of the Bulge and Where Eagles Dare are better but it's certainly up there.
