Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall - three albums of the highest calibre.

Whilst not that great vocally, in David Gilmour they had a wonderful lead guitarist, Richard Wright had an ear for adding some great harmony and melodies, Nick Mason was decent with the sticks and of course the catalyst was the craftsmanship, timing and creative talent of Roger Waters.

The internal turmoil and rage in and around them just added to the dramatic tension that enveloped the band from the moment when they abandoned their best friend and founder in pursuit of material success.

I'd still list them as one of my favourite bands but I rarely listen to them now other than DSotM and some live clips on YouTube.

Apart from Gilmour, Pink Floyd aren't great musicians and if you listen to their 70s studio albums they aren't virtuoso in any way. Also, compared to prog rock bands like King Crimson, Yes, ELO and the like, they aren't very sophisticated either.

Gilmour has a unique sounding voice and guitar, Waters is an okay bass player, could write a good lyric but singing-wise he couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

What makes them better than most of their peers is their experiments ambient sound and mood.

One album which hardly gets a mention of brilliant Floyd albums is 'The Final Cut'. A very underrated album I think.

For me they started with Meddle, peaked with Dark Side and tailed off after the Final Cut.

No denying they have produced one of the best albums ever made and have been one of the most successful bands in history.
