A really gripping read. All based on the author's life as part of a Mormon survivalist family.

Just finished As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner and it's excellent.

Had wanted to read one of his books for a while and my initial concerns that it's a humdrum family drama were mercifully shortlived.

It's a short, yet epic, darkly comic family drama, structured as a sequence of first person narratives -and at times streams of conciousness- from different family members and friends driving the story forward.

I definitely need to read more Faulkner.

Transmetropolitan, vol. 1 by Warren Ellis (writer) and Darick Robertson (artist). A graphic novel compilation of the opening issues of a comic series about an eccentric, hardnosed, drug popping journalist in a 23rd century that is basically everything wrong with the late 20th amped up to 11. Dark, but often insanely funny, cyberpunkish satire. Goes over the top at times, but seems to know it and relish it. Will continue to the next volume but I have a gut feeling I will burn out on it at some point or the law of diminishing returns will kick in as they go so far over the top that they hit the ceiling. I shall enjoy the ride while it lasts, though.

I just finished The Godfather by Mario Puzo having not seen the film. Absolutely amazing - I'm on a bit of a binge of books from the 60s and 70s after reading Salem's Lot by Stephen King because I'm preferring the writing style to a lot of modern stuff.

Just finished Isabelle in the Afternoon. An enjoyable read.

Next from the shelf is 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World by Elif Shafak

I definitely going to read more of his books. Is that one structured in the same way, with the multiple first-person narratives do you know? Don't want to Google too much and blunder into a spoiler. Some people seem to say The Sound and the Fury isn't his best, despite his best efforts, so keen to try a different one.

Certainly, I prefer King from that early period (70s and 80s) to a lot of his later stuff. Salem's Lot remains a favorite but I have a fondness for dark, nasty vampires and Kurt Barlow fills the bill nicely.

Finished Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchikovsky. It was okay I suppose? Very bland compared to his other stuff. I dont understand why he made the armies so small in it tbh, it was all a bit forgettable.

Finished "10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World" which is beautifully written and I really enjoyed it.

Next up is "Gods of Jade and Shadow" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
