I'm thinking of visiting some of the islands this year once we are able to travel again - so it might be closer to autumn/winter.

I've never been to any before, any recommendations?

Are you planning on going by yourself or with the family?

I definitely recommend Harris and Skye. If you have the opportunity to go in the summer and the weather is decent the beaches on Harris are beautiful. Luskentyre beach is one of my favourite places ever and Scarista beach is lovely too.

There is probably more to do on Skye than on Harris but you'd need to check nearer the time to see if lockdown restriction have been in place although the islands have mainly been in lower tiers than the mainland.

Islay is perfect if you're into golf and whisky and Arran also could be the place to go with seven golf courses and two distilleries.

Totally agree, here's what I said previously in the Outer Hebrides thread

If you've never been to Harris or Lewis, when you do get there be prepared to see some of the best beaches in the world and get used to being on them with just your family.

I love Ullapool too. The trip down to Achiltibuie never fails to get the wow moment when you look back inland to Stac Pollaidh and those other fantastic mountains.

Stac Pollaidh - fantastic viewpoint in Assynt Scotland

Stac Pollaidh is the best short hike in Assynt Scotland. This little mountain is an amazing viewpoint, an easy hike and only 20 minutes drive from Ullapool.

Watching with interest. When I get to Scotland again, the Highlands and islands will be my target. I did Glasgow and Edinburgh when we were there on a tour of the UK in 2019.

A couple of years ago, I did Islay and Jura over 4 days, but no whisky tours. Did it end of April start of May and was quiet. Loved every second of it, but I'd say avoid Port Askaig Hotel. It's a throwback to the sixties.

Islay is by some way my favourite island I've been to.

Skye is a wonderful place but don't do it at peak times. It is heaving and can spoil the ambience

I looked at nipping over to Knoydart from Mallaig. At the time it was £20 each way, put me off a bit. I will do it one day though

The ferries are all extortionate. It is one thing that put me off making weekend trips to the islands when I stayed in Tyndrum.
