The post raises valid points regarding the pros and cons of buying games on release, but it could be more detailed with examples or data to strengthen the argument.

Is there any reason to buy a game on release?

When you buy a game on release, it's a high price, and in most cases has plenty of bugs. If you wait 6 months, the price is halved and patches have been released which fix all the issues.

Take the recent, messy release of Cyberpunk 2077, you would be better waiting until February or March next year by which time it will, hopefully, play like a dream.

I certainly wouldn't replay through a game again after it has been patched since my backlog only allows for one playthrough before I tackle the next game on my list. I'd prefer that single playthrough to be the best possible experience so I'm happy to wait, pick up a bug-free version and usually at a cheaper price.

For single player - absolutely no reason at all, unless its something semi online like a Soul's game, where there's a shared sense of discovery / puzzle cracking.

For multiplayer - fear of missing out, putting yourself behind in the skill gap, etc, etc.

Don't pre-order and don't buy until reviews are out and you can make an informed decision on whether the game is worth buying on/just after release.

I love buying games day one that I'm hyped for. I love following games development, finding out info, speculating and generally getting excited to see what it's like. If I really like the sound of a game, I want to play it as soon as possible. Sometimes I'll get burned but sometimes it will be great and all my time spent looking forward to it pays off. Yeah, these days games get so much better after a few months of patches and i should wait to get the proper experience but for some games i just can't wait.

I look forward to a game, I want to play it ASAP.
