Second World War veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore, who inspired the nation in lockdown by raising millions for the NHS, has died aged 100, his family says.

Captain Sir Tom contracted coronavirus and was receiving treatment for pneumonia.

He became a national treasure and a household name after raising more than £32m for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden with his zimmer frame.

Sad to hear of Captain Sir Tom Moore's passing. I was really hoping he would pull through.

What an inspirational man. He stepped up for his country in WWII, then as a 99 year old man, he did so again, and raised a nations spirits with his never give up attitude. The world has lost a true hero and a great man. May he rest in peace.

He's created a great legacy and through his work has ensured many more people will survive.

A life well lived and a great legacy....raises over £30million, knighted by the Queen. In his interviews he always seemed to very positive and a good sense of humour.

It's sad but you cannot say he didn't live life to the full, and that he didn't go out with a bang.

To spend the final year of your long life like that is incredible really. He's gone out with no regrets.
