As we move through different stages of life, many of us notice subtle shifts in how our bodies respond to certain foods and drinks - and coffee seems to be one of the most common. While once it might have been the comforting start to a morning, for some, it becomes a source of discomfort or even aversion later on.

There are several possible explanations. Changes in metabolism, hormone levels, and gut sensitivity can all affect how we process caffeine and acidity. Some people find that coffee starts to upset their stomach or feels too harsh on an empty stomach. Others mention changes in taste perception - coffee that once seemed rich and aromatic can start to taste metallic or overly bitter.

It's also worth considering lifestyle changes. As we age, sleep patterns, stress tolerance, and hydration needs shift, all of which might influence our coffee habits. Some switch to milder options, like half-caff, decaf, or herbal teas, while others cut coffee out entirely.

I thought it would be interesting to discuss this from different angles:
  • Have you experienced changes in your tolerance for coffee or other foods?
  • Do you think hormonal or metabolic changes could be influencing these shifts?
  • And what do you reach for instead when coffee no longer feels quite right?

I think pregnancy was the turning point for me. I used to love coffee, but during my first pregnancy, the smell alone made me queasy. After that, it just never tasted the same again. I suspect it's hormonal.
