Just watched this today. Wonderful low-key family drama with the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a backdrop. If you mostly know Zhang Yimou from his historical epics or Olympic work, this film shows another side of the director. I have been a fan of Zhang since the early nineties and his ability to handle intimate dramas like this as capably as wild wuxia action or battle scenes is part of why.
