The UK government plans to introduce digital driving licences in 2025 as part of a push to modernize public services. 🇬🇧🪪📱

These voluntary digital licences will be accessible through a new Gov.uk smartphone app and could serve as ID for activities like buying alcohol, voting, or domestic travel.

While physical licences will still be issued, officials aim to leverage technology to make identity verification more secure and convenient. The app will feature robust security measures like biometrics and multi-factor authentication, ensuring only licence holders can access their information.

The digital licences may also allow users to hide personal details, such as addresses, in specific situations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate services like tax payments and benefits claims into a centralized digital wallet. The UK joins countries like Australia, Denmark, and the U.S. in adopting virtual licences, though the government has stopped short of implementing a full digital ID system, citing privacy concerns. The rollout is expected later this year, offering a glimpse of how technology could transform public service accessibility.

Good idea for me, hopefully you can add it to your Apple Wallet or Android equivalent.

Seems it's a standalone app though.

Already got my NI card in my wallet. Wonder when passports will go digital.

Everything on your phone just makes everything so simple.

Any objectors?

As long as there's a physical option. There is too much reliance on technology/online services nowadays for me and leaving an awful lot of people out of the loop.

I do prefer the digital option myself though.
