Eddie Van Halen Has Died Music Chat

Rock star and guitar great Eddie Van Halen has died aged 65 after a "long and arduous battle" with throat cancer, his son has said.

In a statement, his son Wolf said: "I can't believe I'm having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning.

"He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift.

"My heart is broken and I don't think I'll ever fully recover from this loss.

"I love you so much, Pop."

Van Halen had been battling the disease for years after being being diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2000.

He blamed it on the metal picks he used to hold in the same spot in his mouth.

Just saw the news, awful to hear, loved Van Halen as a kid, it was just super cool rock and metal.

Rest in peace and shred in heaven.

My brother was the big Van Halen fan in our household. I took a while to warm up to them, but got there eventually. This news just made my heart sink. He was a brilliant musician and the band was such a part of the soundtrack of my youth.

Iconic band, a product of their time and a soundtrack to many kids of the 80's memories. Van Halen's first album is still one of my all-time favourites.

I had no idea about cancer. A sad loss, if a "statement of intent" moment ever existed in rock music it's the opening two tracks on their debut album. Eruption then You Really Got Me.
