The post provides a clear and concise summary of Southgate's resignation, including relevant quotes and context. However, it could benefit from a brief analysis or commentary on the implications of his departure for the England team.

Gareth Southgate has stepped down from his role as manager of the England men's side.

Southgate's decision comes following England's European Championship final defeat by Spain on Sunday.

After that game, the 53-year-old refused to be drawn on his future with his contract due to expire in December.

"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all," Southgate said in a statement via the FA on Tuesday.

"But it's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.

"I have had the privilege of leading a large group of players in 102 games. Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts, and they have been a credit to their country in so many ways.

"The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of. I am so proud of them, and I hope we get behind the players and the team at St. George's Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football and understand the power football has to drive positive change.

"I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can."

Southgate's England Record

Tournament record:
Fourth at 2018 World Cup, runners-up at Euro 2020, quarter-final at 2022 World Cup, runners-up at Euro 2024.

Overall record: Played 102, won 61, drawn 24, lost 17, scored 213, conceded 72, win ratio 59.8%.

I know a lot of fans didn't like him or his tactics but I think he did a good job, he transformed the team.

He did a great job, imo. No one can actually tell me he deserves the amount if hate he gets. It probably is the right time for a change though, not just for the team but Gareth too.

The problem is the English culture, they think they should win all the time. The "football is coming home" belief is actually quite pathetic - some even argue through historical facts that Scotland is the rightful "home"

He did a great job. Winning something was the only thing that was missing. I feel the best chance was the last Euros when they lost to Italy in the final.

Tactically, he maybe was not as good as his counterparts but in terms of culture, he has modernised it for England.
