Hay Fever General Chat

7/10

The post is clear and on-topic, asking for additional remedies for hay fever, but it could benefit from more detail about what has already been tried. Overall, it provides some context and invites community engagement.

My hay fever kicked in around 2 weeks ago from tree pollen I think

Already take an anti-histamine, shower at night if been in the garden, Vick up the nose etc

Anyone got any other successful hay fever remedy tips ?

I've not had any symptoms yet this year but I usually find Cetrine and Dymista in the morning really helps me. Then I have those individual eye drops that go everywhere with me!

Most of my symptoms have been mild enough this year - bit of an itchy throat in the mornings but antihistamines seem to sort that out. The exception has been my nose. It's completely out of control and I keep having random attacks of explosive sneezing - I'll try Vaseline and/or Vicks

Here's what I do about it. Works great.

You've heard of Mr. Clean?

It's a common 20 inch box fan for 20 bucks as found at any walmart. Attached to a badass, 4 inch thick, 20x20-inch, MERV-16 carbon-infused HVAC filter.

So for around 80 bucks, I have made an air purifier that does as much or more than ones people spend 400 bucks on. This filter catches everything, even viruses. That means your pollen and other allergens, bacteria, anything down to .3 micron. And of course anything larger, such as dust.

The filter cuts the volume output of this fan down to about half, but that's still 850 CFM which means it will turn over the air in a pretty large room 4 times an hour. Or, my entire house 9 times per day. Scrubbing and scouring the air. The carbon absorbs odors. You can literally blow tobacco smoke into this mutha and nothing comes out of the other side.

Texas is reported to be experiencing a "pollen tsunami" due to the arctic cold snap we had. This takes care of that, in my house.

Filter is rated to last 6 months in a 4000CFM HVAC air handler in continuous duty, I calculate that my usage of it at 850CFM intermittently, (pointless to run this while windows open) means it will last at least eight years before the filter starts to clog. Then you just pick up another one and mount the sucker on there.

Cheap, long-lasting redneck air purification ingenuity! I've had it running on lowest speed (putting out about 200 CFM) day and night for 24 days and the difference is drastic. I have not one sniffle, not one watery eye, no allergy symptoms whatsoever - and with NO pharmaceuticals used at all.

You may now resume shaving your back.

So if covid has taught me one thing this past year it's that those blue and white medical masks work wonders filtering out pollen! I've even started wearing my mask around the house and am not sneezing anymore! When things get back to normal I'm going to continue wearing face masks during the high pollen months of May to July.

My pollen allergies have usually been late season ones due to ragweed (most likely, never actually been tested). However, those have been milder the last couple years so not sure what's up, whether I am reacting less or there is less ragweed around me. I do get a bit of rhinitis in the spring, but not enough to fuss about. My wife and son are more prone to tree pollen and my son has terrible grass allergies.

Really struggling at the minute, not so much my eyes as is normally the case but getting a lot of mucus build up in my nose and throat.

It's starting to make me feel lethargic and cold like symptoms. No fever or cough so I don't think it's Covid.

Anyone else had this?

I think the pollen count is just generally quite high this year (forecast today and next few days is very high - even though it was overcast most of today where I am). I have had some symptoms of hay fever and never usually suffer.

Suffered really bad most of my adult life, started taking Fexofenadine last couple of years, makes a massive difference. It is the only thing that has ever worked for me.

Worth looking into for anyone that's not tried it.

Can you get that over the counter?
