During Sony's latest State of Play, Guerrilla Games shows off 14 minutes of Horizon Forbidden West gameplay.

In the Horizon Forbidden West video, you get to see some combat, swimming, climbing, weapons, machines, and more.

14 mins of just pure gameplay. Looks beautiful and will no doubt be even more stunning in 4K HDR. Gameplay does look like it will be a lot of fun.

Only annoying thing about that was no release date, not even a window.

Horizon Forbidden West is due to release in a couple of weeks, and ahead of the game coming to PS4 and PS5 consoles, we're starting to see the first hands-on impressions of the game hit the internet. As expected, initial impressions suggest this is a game that goes above and beyond the scope of the 2017 original, showcasing Guerrilla Games' remarkable use of tech and improving on the foundations that the previous game set up so thoroughly.

Per the first hands-on preview from IGN, "combat is more complex, exploration is more free, and the world is teeming with more intriguing life (both robotic and human)" in Forbidden West than it was in Zero Dawn. One of the most eye-catching improvements the developer has made to the game, this time around, comes in the form of a new-and-improved UI overlay when you're climbing.

Across the board you'll need 16GB of RAM and 150GB of SSD storage space, while it's the mid-range and older GeForce RTX 3060 and Radeon RX 5700 GPUs that you'll want for 1080p at 60FPS, which is still such a sweet spot for PC gaming. Anything better than that, and you'll need a GPU that cost you more than a PS5. The GeForce RTX 3070 and Radeon RX 6800 are in that "PS5 equivalent" class, able to deliver either 1440p at 60FPS or 4K at 30FPS.

While CPU core counts and speeds are important, the main focus here will be on the GPU. At the very lowest end you'll need either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 or an AMD Radeon RX 5500XT. Both are 2019 vintage cards, with the goal being of providing 720p at 30FPS performance. What's interesting to note is that both are a generation newer than what was the recommended spec for hitting 1080p 60FPS in Horizon Zero Dawn's PC port – the GeForce GTX 1060 and the very PS4 Pro-like Radeon RX 480 – but their performance brackets are a bit different. The GTX 1650 is actually a weaker card than the GTX 1060, while the RX 5500XT is a bit stronger than the RX 480.

I'm about a third through this and it's been a blast so far. I'm currently completing side quests around Plainsong which has been a really great region in general - the look and asthetic, the music / harmonies are just excellent.

The game has a bit of old-school jank for sure, but the moment-to-moment combat is really varied and satisfying. I'm also liking the open-world stuff much more than I expected. They've kept it sparse and less collectable-y which ensures that I'm actively looking out for and engaged in exploring new things as opposed to it being a grind.
