Country music superstar and Hollywood actor Kris Kristofferson has died.

The country music superstar and A-list Hollywood actor died at his home on Maui, Hawaii on Saturday, family spokeswoman Ebie McFarland said in an email. He was 88.

McFarland said Kristofferson died peacefully, surrounded by his family. No cause was given.

Starting in the late 1960s, the Brownsville, Texas native wrote such classic standards as "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," "Help Me Make it Through the Night," "For the Good Times" and "Me and Bobby McGee." Kristofferson was a singer himself, but many of his songs were best known as performed by others, whether Ray Price crooning "For the Good Times" or Janis Joplin belting out "Me and Bobby McGee."

He also starred opposite Ellen Burstyn in director Martin Scorsese's 1974 film "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," starred opposite Barbra Streisand in the 1976 "A Star Is Born," and acted alongside Wesley Snipes in Marvel's "Blade" in 1998.

One of the great American songwriters. A true superstar and legend of "outlaw" country music.

Loved him in Convoy.

Remarkable life. Made some great music, acted in some great films, and never compromised.

Sad news.

An incredibly talented individual.

Great man, great actor, great songwriter and I loved his lived-in voice. They don't make them anything like Kris Kristofferson anymore.

By his own admission he hadn't the greatest voice ever but boy could he write a song.

These lyrics are as good as it gets.

Well, I woke up Sunday mornin'
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day

An American legend. So sad to hear.

He was one of the greatest American songwriters of all time, and he was a good actor while he was at it. 88 is a great run.

By his own admission, he was not the best singer but what a songwriter!

I've lost count of the times I've watched Convoy through the years. He was also excellent in A Star Is Born (with Streisand) and the Blade films.

He was also a Rhodes scholar at Oxford and a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. So, there was much more to him than the fabulous film/music career.

What a life.
