Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has confirmed that the company has no immediate plans to raise the price of the upcoming Switch 2, despite rising component costs impacting the gaming industry. This decision comes at a time when competitors Sony and Microsoft have already increased their console prices in response to tariffs.
Furukawa emphasised the company's commitment to maintaining profitability for hardware, suggesting that unless there are significant external changes, such as tariff adjustments, the pricing structure will remain stable. He mentioned ongoing efforts to reduce costs in certain areas as part of their mass production strategy for the Switch 2, indicating that they do not foresee a drastic impact on profitability from the current material cost increases.
The president also touched on Nintendo's strategy regarding the Switch 2's market penetration. Initially, the company expects to attract existing Switch users, but they are also exploring ways to appeal to new customers through software releases and marketing strategies.
Shigeru Miyamoto, a renowned figure in Nintendo's game development, added insight into the enduring popularity of the Mario Kart franchise, hinting that while the company encourages innovation, it may be challenging for any new title to surpass the iconic franchise in sales.
