I speculate it's more an overture for an attempt to tap into that sweet "shared universe" money that's all the rage across Hollywood. The producers have had brief flirtations with spin-offs before, never taking off presumably due to the quick realisation there's no market for a Bond movie without Bond. As far back as Halle Berry back during the Brosnan days, or the more recent version of Moneypenny was to get her own film.

Or it could just be a marketing gimmick to try and distance Bond from its reputation. Look how many girlboss spies we have in our film!
A bit of both I think

Really enjoyed this and I think it is an excellent movie but...to me, it's not a Bond movie.

I've enjoyed the Craig stint for what it was but I'd like the next reboot to be a somewhat back to basics approach.

I very much enjoyed NTTD, but, found it too long by about 20mins, thought some of the dialogue was a bit clunky and I did not like Rami Malek as the main protagonist at all, in fact I thought he was crap, no menace.

The locations were amazing, there was plenty of action and I thought the new characters were great!

There's actually a series (trilogy, maybe?) of Moneypenny novels. Of course, the Fleming estate and the movie folks continue to be at legal loggerheads as far as I know so who knows if Eon/MGM could actually get the rights to those. They can't touch any of the post-Fleming novels, I know, without getting a rights deal for them.

found it too long by about 20mins,
That was my concern when I saw the length. Longer Bond movies tend to stretch scenes too far or overdo things, I find. Hope to see it eventually. I am still leery of cinemas and wasn't going to them much in recent years to start with (too expensive these days).

I really enjoyed it, could have easily been 30-40 minutes shorter and Ana De Armas could have easily been in it for another 2 hours.

I love Rami Malek and I don't think he did a bad job but I'm not sure he was as natural a baddie as some who have gone before him.

Good performances from the others who are now well nailed into their roles.

This feels like the first Bond that's ever had a beginning and end. I think it is bold what they did as it is different and for me, it worked.

Absolutely agree. Craig's Bond is, for me, the only one to establish some sort of emotional connection with the viewers.

Nowhere near as good as Casino Royale and Skyfall which I feel are easily the best Bond movies of the last 30 years. It was a fun movie and I enjoyed it but it had room to be a better movie with a tighter plotline and more character depth for the interesting characters.

What's everyone's opinion on Rami Malek's performance? I found him a bit underwhelming as far as Bond villains go.

I felt he was a bit flat and not really given enough scenes to work with. Too much time, IMO was spent on the whole let's kill off all of Spectre plotline when it really wasn't established how Malek's character suddenly had so much power and influence. It was really a waste of his ability as an actor IMO. Plus, the whole double agent that caused Felix to get killed screen time just seemed like a waste for the sole purpose of killing Felix Leiter. That character was just wack.

They should have just cut out that smiley guy and Leiter entirely and the movie could have had more time to really develop and explain Rami's character better. As is, he was just like this mish mash of "Bond Villain" tropes and not as compelling as Javier Bardem for example.
