Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Explore the city, unravel its secrets and battle Pokémon like never before! An urban redevelopment plan is underway in Lumiose City!

The goal: to turn it into a place where Pokémon and people can truly share.

Shortly after arriving, you'll choose from one of these partner Pokémon to accompany you on your journey – Chikorita, Tepig or Totodile. Together, you can explore the streets of this vast city or visit Wild Zones – habitats where you'll encounter wild Pokémon.

To catch them, aim carefully and throw a Poké Ball or take them on with the help of the Pokémon on your team.

For the first time ever, Trainers and their Pokémon will move around and take action in real time during battles.

Pokémon will unleash their moves when their Trainers command them to. In addition to type matchups, there will be new mechanics to consider, such as the precise timing for swapping out your Pokémon or using moves, the different lengths of time moves will take to launch, and how big an area the moves will impact.

In Lumiose City, Pokémon can go beyond Evolution by undergoing Mega Evolution! When a Trainer's Key Stone resonates with the Mega Stone held by their Pokémon, the Pokémon will do more than just change shape and size – it will unlock a new level of power, which could turn the tide of battle!

As we approach the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, set to launch in October after a three-year hiatus, fans are buzzing with excitement about what this instalment brings to the beloved franchise. Here are some key highlights to consider before diving in:

Dual Platform Launch
For the first time, a mainline Pokémon game will be available on both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 on the same day. The Switch 2 version will cost $10 more, but players can upgrade their purchase anytime.

Nintendo Vouchers
The game can be purchased at a discount through Nintendo's voucher system, which is still available for the original Switch version. This allows players to effectively save on the Switch 2 version of the game.

Performance Enhancements
The Switch 2 version will run at 60fps, marking a significant technological leap for the franchise since Pokémon Emerald in 2005.

Game Bundles
Nintendo plans to bundle Pokémon Legends: Z-A with Switch 2 systems, creating a cost-effective option for fans looking to upgrade.

Real-Time Battles
The new battle system shifts from turn-based to real-time mechanics, introducing a fresh combat experience that builds on the innovations from the previous Legends game.

Customization Features
Players can personalise both their characters and Pokémon in Lumiose City, enhancing the role-playing aspect of the game.

Rich Side Quests
Following the successful introduction of side quests in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, this game promises a wealth of engaging side content to explore.

Pokémon HOME Compatibility
While the game will support Pokémon HOME, players should be cautious about transferring Pokémon due to changes in the stat system that may affect compatibility with future titles.

Focus on Zygarde and Mega Evolutions
Z-A will finally give Zygarde the spotlight it has long deserved, along with the return of Mega Evolutions, including new forms for various Pokémon.

DLC Plans
Unlike its predecessor, Z-A will feature post-launch content, including additional Mega Evolutions, ensuring that players have more to look forward to after the initial release.

In summary, Pokémon Legends: Z-A appears to be a robust addition to the franchise, promising innovation while honouring legacy elements that fans cherish. Players should consider these points to maximise their experience when the game launches.

Key Highlights:
  • Dual launch on Switch and Switch 2
  • Discounts available via Nintendo vouchers
  • 60fps performance on Switch 2
  • Game bundles with Switch 2 systems
  • New real-time battle system
  • Extensive character and Pokémon customisation
  • Engaging side quests
  • Compatibility with Pokémon HOME with caution
  • Spotlight on Zygarde and Mega Evolutions
  • Planned DLC post-launch

Gemma Mentor
The recent release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A has sparked significant disappointment among players, as illustrated by its low user score of 4.3 on Metacritic. Critics may have been more lenient, but the player feedback has been overwhelmingly negative, highlighting various concerns, including:

Key Criticisms:
  • High price is perceived as unjustifiable.
  • Subpar graphics and poor visual quality compared to contemporary titles.
  • Limited map size and a lack of exploration opportunities.
  • Repetitive gameplay that feels unengaging.
  • Absence of voice acting, which detracts from the immersive experience.
Many players have expressed their disappointment through scathing reviews, with one stating, "The graphics are flat, and the world feels empty," echoing a sentiment that the game resembles a poorly executed remaster rather than a new release. This stark divide between critical and user reviews indicates a broader frustration with the direction of the franchise since the release of Pokémon X/Y.

In contrast with earlier titles that offered more engaging content, Z-A has been criticised for its lack of innovation. Fans are left wondering how one of the most successful franchises in gaming history can release a product that feels so unsatisfactory. As anticipation builds for Gen 10, hope remains that it can restore faith in the series.
