Project Windless
Project Windless is a single-player open-world action RPG set in the universe of the acclaimed Korean fantasy novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears.

Step into a mythic age as a mighty Rekon warrior and journey across a breathtaking, war-torn world.

Stand against overwhelming odds, forge alliances, and wage war across massive battlefields to unite a fractured land and give birth to a new kingdom.

Set roughly 1,500 years before the events of the novels, Project Windless unfolds across a vast fantasy world inhabited by four intelligent races: Humans, Rekon, Nhaga, and Tokkebi. Each brings its own culture, beliefs, and conflicts to a continent-spanning war that players will influence through exploration, combat, and diplomacy.

The game places players in the role of the Hero King, a powerful warrior of the Rekon race. These towering, bird-like beings are known for their strength and ferocity, and the Hero King stands at the centre of a growing conflict that will shape the future of the world.

Armed with twin star-forged blades, players will fight across dynamic battlefields, confront enormous creatures, and forge alliances between rival factions. The story is designed to evolve based on player decisions, allowing actions in combat and exploration to ripple outward and influence the wider war.

KRAFTON has officially announced Project Windless, an ambitious open-world action RPG that draws inspiration from the acclaimed Korean fantasy novel series, The Bird That Drinks Tears. This title, which was unveiled during Sony's State of Play showcase, is being developed for PC and consoles by KRAFTON Montréal Studio.

Set approximately 1,500 years before the events of the novels, Project Windless introduces players to a richly developed world teeming with conflict among four intelligent races: Humans, Rekon, Nhaga, and Tokkebi. Players will step into the role of the Hero King, a formidable warrior of the Rekon race, as they navigate a continent-spanning war influenced by their decisions in exploration, combat, and diplomacy.

A key highlight is the game's real-time combat system, featuring large-scale battles powered by a technology KRAFTON refers to as "Mass Technology." This allows for dynamic encounters, placing players directly in the midst of epic clashes where they can influence the outcome.

Project Windless aims to deliver a premium single-player experience, focusing on storytelling and player agency, deliberately steering clear of multiplayer or live-service components. Using Unreal Engine 5, the game promises a visually stunning experience that emphasises responsive combat and immersive exploration.

Given its unique blend of mythology and gameplay that shapes the narrative, Project Windless is poised to be a fresh addition to the RPG landscape, particularly for those seeking a departure from typical fantasy tropes.

Key Points:
  • Newly revealed by KRAFTON during Sony's State of Play.
  • Set in the universe of The Bird That Drinks Tears, 1,500 years pre-novels.
  • Players control the Rekon Hero King amidst a continent-wide conflict.
  • Features real-time battles with thousands of soldiers using "Mass Technology."
  • Focused on a premium single-player experience with no multiplayer elements.
  • Developed using Unreal Engine 5 for a visually rich environment.
  • Aims to provide player-driven storytelling and immersive worldbuilding.

Project Windless is generating considerable buzz, particularly as it aims to adapt Lee Youngdo's acclaimed fantasy series, The Bird That Drinks Tears. This project has drawn the attention of Patrik Méthé, a seasoned director known for his work on the Far Cry series, who joined Krafton's Montreal studio after being intrigued by a LinkedIn message that likened the project to "the Korean Witcher."

Though comparisons to other popular franchises like God of War are inevitable, Méthé insists that Project Windless carves its own path by emphasising a unique narrative and gameplay experience centred on war and alliance-building. Unlike typical open-world games, every player's action will significantly impact the game's world, creating a dynamic and engaging experience.

The protagonist, the Hero King, is depicted as an almost mythic figure, which allows players to explore their own narrative within the game's expansive universe. With a combat system that encourages players to take on large groups of enemies, the game promises to offer a thrilling experience unlike any other. Méthé's background in open-world design informs the development process, focusing on player choice and emotional engagement with characters.

As the team continues to refine Project Windless, they are excited about the positive reception of the reveal trailer, indicating a promising future for the game. While still in pre-alpha development, the project aims to bridge cultural gaps and bring a beloved Korean story to a global audience.
