Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds presents itself as an exhilarating kart racing experience that embodies the chaotic spirit of arcade racing while introducing a nuanced handling model that offers depth for dedicated players. This title serves as a vibrant homage to the beloved Sonic franchise, merging nostalgia with modern gameplay mechanics.

At its core, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds follows the familiar framework of a kart racer. Players can select their character and vehicle - ranging from classic cars to hoverboards - each choice impacting stats such as strength, speed, and acceleration. The gameplay consists of competing in a Grand Prix format, which includes four intense races against 11 other competitors. The game stands out for its relentless pace, where power-ups and track obstacles are constantly in play, creating an atmosphere of frenetic fun that can sometimes feel overwhelming.
  • A diverse range of playable characters and vehicles
  • Intense racing experience with numerous power-ups
  • Customisation options available to enhance vehicles
Customisation is a key feature, allowing players to equip various items that provide stat boosts or special abilities. While the initial selection of gadgets may seem simplistic, players will quickly unlock a more extensive array of options, encouraging experimentation and strategic choices in each race. For instance, certain gadgets can help players recover from setbacks, making them particularly useful for new players.

Classic racing mechanics, such as power-sliding and boosting, are complemented by unique gameplay elements, including transforming into planes and boats during races. While the aerial sections provide a brief reprieve from the ground-based chaos, the boat segments do not offer the same level of excitement or dynamism, often feeling flat in comparison to the fast-paced action on land.

The titular CrossWorlds feature allows the leading racer to teleport themselves and their competitors to alternate tracks mid-race, adding a layer of unpredictability. This mechanic, while intriguing, does not significantly enhance the racing experience. The teleportation is executed in a rather mundane manner, and the novelty of the CrossWorlds seems to wear off quickly, particularly during the final races of the Grand Prix, where previous courses are revisited.

Multiplayer options shine in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, offering both online and local four-player split-screen modes. These modes introduce team-based events that twist standard racing rules, such as providing speed boosts for driving into teammates or offering bonuses for ring collection. This variety adds an enjoyable competitive edge, though the core Grand Prix remains the primary draw.
  • Engaging multiplayer options, including local and online play
  • Team-based events that enhance the competitive experience
  • Customisation and gadget system add depth to gameplay
Despite the fun factor, the Grand Prix mode does lack a deeper narrative or exploration elements. Players who relish time trials and honing their racing skills will find satisfaction in the handling model, which is responsive and rewarding. Those who prefer a more casual racing experience might find themselves overwhelmed by the game's chaotic nature.

Visually, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is bright and colourful, though some graphical details appear less polished than expected for a modern console game. Additionally, the soundtrack presents a mixed bag, featuring both catchy tunes and others that may not resonate well with all players. The integration of crossover elements with non-SEGA franchises, while exciting, is tied to paid DLC, which could deter some players from accessing more visually interesting tracks and characters.

Ultimately, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a thrilling ride for those seeking an arcade racing experience that prioritises fun and chaos. It stands apart from more refined competitors like Mario Kart, offering a unique blend of unrestrained energy and strategic depth. For players who appreciate the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of kart racing, this title is a worthy addition to their collection.
  • Fast-paced, chaotic gameplay with a focus on fun
  • Diverse customisation and gadget options
  • Challenging handling model for competitive players
  • Mixed visual and audio presentation
  • Multiplayer modes enhance replayability
