Finished Jack Whyte's The Burning Stone a prequel to his Arturian series. I have always been a big historical fiction fan and was looking forward to my first book with this author. The story is set in the early 4th century in Roman Britain and overall I liked it although the middle part of the book went on a bit.

Just finished two books, My Brilliant Friend and The Story of a New Name, both by Elena Ferrante.

I must have passed by Elena Ferrante's novels a thousand times in bookshops and never once felt bothered, then someone with a clue recommended her to me and I devoured those two books in a week. Outstanding writer.

Just finished The Trespasser by Tana French and I'm not completely sure what I think of it. I've read most of her other Dublin Murder Squad books and like those, this edition will need another read to decide.

Ashamed to say that I am giving up on The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Don't get me wrong, I loved The Hobbit and The LOTR trilogy but God this is an awful slog. Could only get through the first 11 chapters and it wasn't getting any better.

I can't even say that it's going in one ear and out the other because nothing at all is sticking with me.

I just finished "Layla" and also "Verity" both by Colleen Hoover. Layla was pretty good; better than the latter. Surprising twist ending on both!

Re-reading The Great Gatsby, a great novel full of terrible people.

Icebound in the Arctic: The Mystery of Captain Francis Crozier and the Franklin Expedition by Michael Smith

I enjoyed reading this captivating account of the life of Northern Irish explorer Captain Francis Crozier who travelled to both the Arctic and Antarctica over the course of his career. He would also be second in command of the Franklin Expedition that disappeared in the Arctic in the 1840s.

Two great books from the opposite ends of the scale. Endurance, by Alfred Lansing. It is a cracking read about how much people went through to discover new lands.

Bright Lights, Big City. Probably one of the funniest things ever put to paper.

Been reading Even Greater Mistakes, a short story collection by s-f/f author and columnist Charlie Jane Anders. Some really good stories in it and Anders has a very unique touch as writers in these genres go. Very character-focussed and emotional, but still with some strong speculative ideas and elements. OTOH, as a sometime writer of fantasy myself, reading her kind of makes me weep because I really can't see myself ever being this good or original.

Just finished Land Rites by Andy Maslen (DI Henry Ford, Book 2).

This is the second book in the series (also my second book). A thoroughly entertaining read. A well thought out and interesting plot that constantly kept you guessing. There were plenty of well written one-off characters, and it added depth to the recurring characters. It also fixed the problem of the first book that had too few suspects.
