"Eleanor Olephant Is Fine"

I'm just over halfway through. It has been very funny and deep so far!

Surgeons' Hall by E. S. Thomson.

I finished reading this over the weekend and still haven't stopped thinking about it!

I've always had a morbid fascination with historical anatomy schools and their relationship with grave-robbers. I didn't actually realise until I was about half way through this that it is part of a series, because it works so well as a standalone novel. It satisfied all of the gruesome curiosity within me, and yet the novel's macabre subject matter did not overshadow Thomson's masterfully constructed plot. She jumps masterfully between Burke and Hare's Edinburgh and London anatomy schools to craft a mystery which I found gripping until the very end. Not to mention her array of complex characters. Twin sisters Sorrow and Silence, one blind and one deaf, will stay with me for a long time. This one is not for the faint hearted.

Patiently awaiting the arrival of the others in the series.

I've polished off "Life After Life" by Kate Atkinson which I thought was fine and re-read "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro which may be one of my favourite books of all time. Currently reading "I Know This Much Is True" by Wally Lamb.

''Happiness is Wasted On Me' by Scottish author Kirkland Ciccone.

I read this in one sitting earlier today and I cannot tell you how much I loved it. Heartbreaking and hilarious - I can guarantee you will love it.

I'm nearing the end of my struggle with Byzantium Endures. Although I have a general principle of finishing a book once I start it, if I'm really not getting into something I put it down, either to pick up again at a later date or in acceptance that it's just not for me.

This book is different because I am enjoying it but I've been struggling to make any progress. I usually have a few books on the go at a time and was reading some non-fiction at the same time as this. Anyway, going to focus my attention on this for the next couple of days and then have a complete change of pace with my next fiction book.

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah (author of The Nightingale, The Great Alone, Firefly Lane ...)

A story set in the 1930s Dust Bowl of America. It follows the struggles of Elsa and her family as they battle years of drought and dust storms. People move west to California in search of a new start and a better life but many challenges and struggles to survive await them. It's a story of struggle and survival, a test of character too. Reading it sure put our own struggles with the pandemic in the shade!

Sad Professor Enthusiast
Shuggie Bain

A wonderful, elegant novel with humour and desperation. It draws you in with sentences that dazzle. Quite extraordinary. The author is very successful now (in fashion and now writing) but describes a world he would have some knowledge of. It is humane, sad, funny and brilliantly written. It will make you glad of the world you inhabit as it is achingly sad. Extraordinary!

Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews

This would have been a superb espionage novel if only the whole Dominika, (the sparrow and main character), seeing coloured halos over people's heads which enables her to accurately read peoples emotions/intentions were dropped. Otherwise, very entertaining read when the halos weren't mentioned.

Also didn't get the idea around having to mention food in each chapter so that a recipe could be thrown in at the end of chapters

An Instance of The Fingerpost by Iain Pears

Really excellent historical mystery set in the 17th century. An initally simple enough story is re-told from differing perspectives. Works equally well as a page turner and as an exploration of the political and social world of that period. One of a kind this book. Highly recommended.
