Fancying a few city breaks across Europe (a few days at a time) and I'm really keen on the idea of going places a bit less touristy - Slovenia, Luxembourg for example.

Any suggestions based upon experience?

Best/cheapest ways to travel?

Berlin, Krakow, and Prague are some of my favourite cities for a short break.

Warsaw is a classy city, too, but it is often overlooked because of Krakow and Gdansk. However, it beats both, IMO. The old town is probably my favourite place in Europe.

I did a 3-day trip to Luxembourg a year and a half ago. Public transport is free throughout the country, but accommodation is rather expensive. The capital is ok, nowt flash.

I hired a car for a couple days, you can get anywhere in Luxembourg within an hour. Some lovely little villages in the countryside. Clervaux, Vianden. Accommodation was a fraction of the price just over the border in either France or Germany.

There's a small town at the bottom, Schengen, what the Schengen movement in Europe is named after. It's sat on a river where France, Luxembourg and Germany borders all meet in one place, marked by a buoy.

Bologna is a beautiful place.

Lovely place Bologna and nice food. And if you really want to get off the beaten track, San Marino's not too far away.

Luxembourg was rubbish; I didn't enjoy it at all.

Ljubljana and Bled are good.

And I also enjoyed Belgrade a lot.
