The Washington Redskins issued a statement on Friday announcing a "thorough review of the team's name."

"In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team's name. This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks," the statement said.

This is coming a long time in fairness. I cannot imagine they haven't already a back up plan in regards name etc. I was reading that it'll come down to the Washington 'Red Tails' or the Washington Football team of District Colombia.

I take it the Chicago Blackhawks will be next then. I mean this has been coming for years with the redskins, but when you know who the team founder is and how much of an asshole he was it's not surprising his team has an offensive name.

What percentage of people need to be offended by something before it's accepted as "offensive?" There's always someone offended over just about anything.

But the opinion that matters (to me) is the group that the name is about, in this case Native Americans. Is something offensive if 1% of Native Americans think so? 10%? 50%? I lean more towards the smaller end of that spectrum. If 10% of Native Americans find the name offensive or racist, I think that's sufficient to change it.

I like the Redtails personally but let's see where they go with it.

Redskins name officially getting retired today it seems. No new name will be announced yet though.

It'll be a massive shock if they don't go with Red Tails.
