When you were young, what were the things that scared you to death?

Monsters under the bed? The Boogeyman that lived in the wardrobe? The thunder and lightning on a stormy night?

For me, it was skeletons and skulls on particular. Mo matter how many times my mother or older sisters would reassure me as a 7-year old that skeletons were just our own bones and couldn't harm me, I simply did not believe them.

The sight of a skeleton would really frighten me. In my bedroom at night, I was terrified these evil figures were just around the corner of the room, ready to kill me.

So what frightened you?

I watched an old black and white version of The Phantom of the Opera one afternoon when I was a kid. It scared the shit of me for years.

I was terrified of crows for a few months after watching Hitchcock's, The Birds, one afternoon with my gran. I was aged around 7 at the time.

Pennywise the clown from the original IT film.

The scene in Jaws where the kid on the inflatable mattress was sucked into the water and then blood sprayed directly up out of the water.

Dogs. I was absolutely petrified of ALL dogs and that carried on until my mid-teens. Probably owned 9 or 10 dogs since then!!!

For me it was the dark, well not really the dark more so night time I had a terrible fear around being the only one awake. I have no idea why or how that fear came about. My dad sorted it out when he drove me down to a nearby factory to show me all the night shift workers.

I can't remember the author now but there was this short story about clowns. Whenever a child got lost at the circus they would grab them, take them to their tent and eat them. It wasn't just a few bad-eggs, according to the author, all clowns do it!

Another of his books was about a creepy circus and it had a horrible fortune teller/witch in it who was terrifying.
