What's The Most Unusual Thing You've Ever Eaten? General Chat Food & Recipes

A while ago when I was in Italy I had grilled octopus. I didn't know what it was before I ate it and, to be honest, I would never have known what it was if the waitress hadn't told me. It wasn't slimy or anything like what an octopus looks like - it was quite tender in texture like chicken.

And when I was in New Zealand a few years ago I had whitebait fritters but I didn't really enjoy them. Whitebait are small juvenile fish that haven't matured. You eat everything - skin, head, bones and innards - in an omelette style mixture. They also tried to get me to try Paua which is a large marine snail but I politely declined ?

What's the most unusual thing you've ever eaten?

Other than the wife's cooking, the only thing I can think of that was "unusual" would be roast partridge which I had on a weekend away up north. It was delicious, served with cider gravy, kale and roast potatoes. The only only thing I would may class as unusual, only because it isn't an every day meal, is ostrich burger.

Do you want a list? With a wife from China, I have had some interesting ones.

Sea cucumber (similar to jellyfish but a bottom dweller)
Jellyfish (dried, salted and put in a kind of salad)
Roast snake (Only once at a fancy restaurant in Shanghai. An uncle who owns a factory was footing the bill.)
Hairy crab (freshwater crabs with hairlike spines on their shells)
Songbirds (unsure of the species, but similar to small ground birds I've had here)

And there's also some interesting vegetables, some of which we can get here now.

And the various ways of preparing tofu, which is kind of like our cheese in terms of the number of varieties. Fermented (aka stinky) tofu, for instance, would be comparable to a cheese like limburger.

They also tried to get me to try Paua which is a large marine snail but I politely declined
One of the signature dishes in Shanghai is red-cooked snails. Yummy, yummy. Not sure if they are ground or marine, though. Fairly big with dark shells.

I don't do unusual food.

Haggis is probably the weirdest thing I've eaten ?

I had a tuna and banana pizza at an Italian restaurant in Edinburgh once. It was actually quite nice.
