Xbox chief Phil Spencer is leaving Microsoft after nearly 40 years at the software giant. Xbox president Sarah Bond is also leaving Microsoft, in what is a major shake-up to the management of Xbox and Microsoft's gaming efforts. Asha Sharma, currently president of CoreAI product, is taking over as CEO of Microsoft Gaming.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Phil Spencer's retirement in a memo to all Microsoft employees today. "Last year, Phil Spencer made the decision to retire from the company, and since then, we've been talking about succession planning," says Nadella. "I want to thank Phil for his extraordinary leadership and partnership. Over 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading Gaming, Phil helped transform what we do and how we do it."

Asha Sharma is taking over from Phil Spencer as the new Microsoft Gaming CEO. Sharma is currently the president of CoreAI product at Microsoft, and has been working closely on Microsoft's AI platform efforts since she rejoined Microsoft in 2024. Spencer will remain in an advisory role through the summer to support the transition.

Sharma expresses a dual sense of humility and urgency, acknowledging the legacy built by her predecessors while recognising the rapid changes within the gaming industry. She emphasises three core commitments:

1. Great Games
The foundation of Xbox's success lies in delivering exceptional games. Sharma stresses the need for unforgettable characters and compelling narratives. To achieve this, she plans to empower studios, invest in beloved franchises, and support innovative ideas.

2. The Return of Xbox
Sharma is dedicated to reconnecting with core Xbox fans and the developers behind the games. While she acknowledges the importance of the console, she also sees the future of Xbox as transcending hardware limitations, aiming for a seamless experience across PC, mobile, and cloud platforms.

3. The Future of Play
Acknowledging the evolving landscape of gaming, Sharma aims to explore new business models and creative avenues. She asserts that games should be regarded as art and not merely as products to monetise. There's a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity and creativity that define the gaming experience.

Sharma's leadership will focus on embracing change while honouring the past, fostering a culture of innovation, and encouraging developers to take bold risks. As she embarks on this journey, she aims to rekindle the renegade spirit that originally shaped Xbox.

Some more news about Sarah Bond's departure.

Sarah Bond, the Xbox President, has decided to leave the company to embark on a new chapter in her career. This news comes on the heels of Phil Spencer's retirement announcement, marking a significant transitional phase for Xbox.

While Bond has been a pivotal figure in shaping Xbox's strategy and expanding Game Pass and cloud gaming, her departure raises questions about the future leadership structure of the brand. Phil Spencer expressed gratitude for Bond's instrumental contributions during a critical period for Xbox, highlighting her role in guiding the platform through major developments and hardware launches.

At this moment, Microsoft has not indicated whether a direct successor to Bond will be named. It is possible that the title of 'Xbox President' may be redefined or eliminated altogether, especially with Asha Sharma and Matt Booty now holding the title of 'Executive Vice President'.

Bond's increasing visibility in the gaming community and her involvement in significant projects, such as Xbox Play Anywhere and the next-generation Xbox console, reflect her impact on the brand. With Asha Sharma stepping into the role of CEO for Microsoft Gaming, the focus now shifts to how this leadership change will influence the future of Xbox.

In her inaugural address as CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Asha Sharma laid out her vision for Xbox's future, emphasising a commitment to core principles that resonate deeply with the gaming community. During a recent interview with IGN's Ryan McCaffrey, Sharma made it clear that while she may not identify as the most skilled gamer, her focus is firmly on making Xbox the premier platform for players.

Sharma outlined four key objectives that will guide her leadership:

1. Make Xbox the best place to play
2. Return to our roots
3. Ship great things
4. Become stronger for the future

This "return to our roots" theme is particularly significant, as it underscores a renewed dedication to the Xbox brand and its foundational values. Sharma highlighted the importance of creating great games that players love, reaffirming the need to reconnect with the community of loyal fans and developers who have shaped the Xbox identity.

Moreover, she expressed a vision for Xbox that transcends hardware limitations, aiming to create a seamless gaming experience across multiple devices, including PC, mobile, and cloud platforms. This approach not only honours the legacy of Xbox but also paves the way for innovation in how games are developed and played.

As we look toward the upcoming 25th anniversary of Xbox, it will be fascinating to see how Sharma's plans unfold and how they will impact the brand in this pivotal year.
