Xbox chief Phil Spencer is leaving Microsoft after nearly 40 years at the software giant. Xbox president Sarah Bond is also leaving Microsoft, in what is a major shake-up to the management of Xbox and Microsoft's gaming efforts. Asha Sharma, currently president of CoreAI product, is taking over as CEO of Microsoft Gaming.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Phil Spencer's retirement in a memo to all Microsoft employees today. "Last year, Phil Spencer made the decision to retire from the company, and since then, we've been talking about succession planning," says Nadella. "I want to thank Phil for his extraordinary leadership and partnership. Over 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading Gaming, Phil helped transform what we do and how we do it."
Asha Sharma is taking over from Phil Spencer as the new Microsoft Gaming CEO. Sharma is currently the president of CoreAI product at Microsoft, and has been working closely on Microsoft's AI platform efforts since she rejoined Microsoft in 2024. Spencer will remain in an advisory role through the summer to support the transition.
Sharma expresses a dual sense of humility and urgency, acknowledging the legacy built by her predecessors while recognising the rapid changes within the gaming industry. She emphasises three core commitments:
1. Great Games
The foundation of Xbox's success lies in delivering exceptional games. Sharma stresses the need for unforgettable characters and compelling narratives. To achieve this, she plans to empower studios, invest in beloved franchises, and support innovative ideas.
2. The Return of Xbox
Sharma is dedicated to reconnecting with core Xbox fans and the developers behind the games. While she acknowledges the importance of the console, she also sees the future of Xbox as transcending hardware limitations, aiming for a seamless experience across PC, mobile, and cloud platforms.
3. The Future of Play
Acknowledging the evolving landscape of gaming, Sharma aims to explore new business models and creative avenues. She asserts that games should be regarded as art and not merely as products to monetise. There's a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity and creativity that define the gaming experience.
Sharma's leadership will focus on embracing change while honouring the past, fostering a culture of innovation, and encouraging developers to take bold risks. As she embarks on this journey, she aims to rekindle the renegade spirit that originally shaped Xbox.
