The Xbox October update has begun rolling out, bringing the 4K dashboard update to all Xbox Series X consoles. Announced on the Xbox Wire, the October update also includes night mode settings for Xbox Series X|S and the ability to quickly change accessibility options from the Xbox Guide. Prior to this update, the Xbox Series X dashboard was 1080p upscaled to 4K. Now, the dashboard will be rendered in native 4K resolution on the Xbox Series X when connected to a 4K display. Icons on the dashboard and Xbox Guide menu will have improved visuals, looking sharper than previously. The October update also adds a suite of night mode settings to Xbox consoles. The options allow you to customize and dim the light of the connected display, helping keep rooms dark at night or helping anyone who is sensitive to light. The night mode options also allow you to dim the light coming from the Xbox controller power button and the power button on the console itself. It includes an option to have the night mode turn on and off at a set schedule. A customizable blue light display filter is available exclusively on Xbox Series X|S consoles. To start using Xbox night mode to dim and filter your screen, as well as dim your console & controller LED brightness, go to Settings > Accessibility > Night mode or Settings > TV & display options > Night mode. Summary 4K dashboard on Xbox Series X consoles – increased sharpness and text readability. Xbox night mode – reduce and adjust light of your Xbox display, console, and controller. Quick settings – easily switch settings to have a personalized experience.
New updates to the Xbox App on Windows 10 PCs now let you stream console games from the cloud or your console. Microsoft has opened up a new way to play console games remotely on your Windows 10 or later PCs thanks to updates made to the Xbox app. This includes support for playing Xbox Game Pass games from the cloud and playing games directly from your console with Xbox remote play. With these new updates, you now can play some of your console titles on a wide range of PCs, even those that don’t have the specs required for certain PC titles. Streaming games through the Xbox App will also allow you to play a game without having to install it on your PC. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members in 22 countries can now play Game Pass games directly from the cloud in the Xbox App on Windows 10 PCs. Game Pass members have been participating in the Xbox Cloud Gaming beta via a browser on their phones, tablets, and PCs and now can reap all the benefits of gaming from the cloud directly from the Xbox app. Playing from the cloud will allow you to continue playing a game you’ve been working through or to try out something completely new before deciding if you want to download it to your console. To access games from the cloud on your Windows 10 PC, you will need an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership and a compatible controller such as an Xbox controller, Sony DualShock 4, Razer Kishi, or others. Once you open the Xbox App, you will then click the “cloud gaming” button, and select from the games in your Game Pass library to start playing right away. Microsoft also added new features to help you get started, including information on the controller and network status, Game Bar integration, social features, and the ability to invite people, even those on the cloud, to join you in a game. To learn more about cloud gaming, hit up the link. Also, this is the first time the company has enabled Xbox Remote Play on PC for Xbox Series X/S owners. Microsoft also added additional upgrades from previous iterations of Remote Play, such as general stability updates, allowing for games to stream at 1080p up to 60fps, and added the ability to play select Xbox 360 and Xbox Original games, which has been a highly-requested feature. Xbox Remote Play is available in all Xbox-supported countries and regions on Windows PC, Android phones and tablets, and iOS phones and tablets.
Sony has confirmed that the second major system software update for the PlayStation 5 is launching tomorrow (September 15), bringing with it some much-needed changes and improvements for the new-gen console. Sony has announced today that the PS5's September firmware update, which has been in beta testing for several weeks, will be available worldwide tomorrow, September 15. This is the console's second major update since its launch in November last year. The September update is PS5's most feature-rich yet. The highlight addition is the arrival of M.2 SSD support for storage expansion, allowing console owners to expand the available space by inserting a supported Gen 4 NVME SSD into the dedicated slot. Unlike traditional external USB storage solutions, attaching an SSD allows players to install PS5 games on the new storage, something not possible on USB external drives. The update also includes 3D audio support for TV speakers, a feature previously exclusive to headphones. Outside of these bigger additions, the new firmware also brings a number of customisability features, making it possible to rearrange and hide icons in the Game Center. There’s a new Trophy tracker, too, available through the Game Center. The new design displays up to five Trophies per game on the page. Finally, there's a massive quality of life tweak included in this update, and it lists PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game separately if you have both installed. It should now also be much clearer - thanks to a new tile design - which version you have.
Microsoft is bringing its Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) service to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/SX consoles later this year, allowing you to download games and try them out before you commit to saving them to your console. Once xCloud integration kicks off on consoles, anyone using an Xbox One, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X can simply click play on an Xbox Game Pass game and immediately start playing it via stream, effectively allowing players to try games before they downloading them (costing you both time and data). As per Microsoft, over 100 Xbox Game Pass titles will be available as part of this first wave of xCloud integration. Interestingly, you'll also be able to sample and play multiplayer games the second you get an invite from pals, without having to download the game. Fancy a co-op round of Minecraft Dungeons? You won't even need to download the game. Microsoft says it will update its Xbox dashboard on consoles to include a cloud icon that will denote which games can be played this way. The service will also allow you to play Xbox Series X/S exclusive games (such as Microsoft Flight Simulator and The Medium) on Xbox One, though the former won't be viable at launch – though it is “coming in the future.” xCloud integration will be available for Xbox Insiders in the fall, before coming to other users Holiday 2021.
One of the biggest Gamescom events this week is the Xbox stream. It's not technically part of Gamescom, but it's a chance for Microsoft to show off more games coming to Xbox. In particular, the stream will focus on updates to already announced games from the company's wider Xbox Game Studios label. Some of those will be first-party, and others developed in partnership with outside teams. Of course, you can also expect some Xbox Game Pass news, as many of the titles shown will likely be available on the subscription service. The show kicks off today at 10am PT, 1pm ET, 6pm UK. You'll be able to watch it on YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and Facebook. The YouTube channel is embedded below.
Xbox has announced that it will be present at this year’s all-digital Gamescom at the end of August and has confirmed a live-streamed event on August 24, too. If you’re looking forward to hearing more news about some of the games Xbox has been working on lately, we’ve got some good news for you: Microsoft has announced that “in-depth updates from some of our previously announced Xbox Game Studios titles alongside some of our third-party partners” will be shown off at Gamescom later this month. The official Gamescom 2021 Xbox Stream will kick off at 10am PT, 1pm ET, 6pm BST Xbox points you towards its YouTube channel, where the show will be available in over 30 languages and will feature English audio descriptions, too. You can also watch the show on Twitch, Facebook Gaming, Twitter, and select regional sites like VK.com in Russia and Bilibili in China, too. Though the company has not detailed which games we’ll be likely to see, it stands to reason we could hear more about the likes of Halo Infinite, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Forza Horizon 5, and maybe even Fable. Don’t expect anything from Bethesda at the showcase, though Bethesda Germany has announced will be live streaming some games on its Twitch channel from August 26. And that’s not all! Xbox has also suggested that Gamescom: Opening Night Live on August 25 could feature something special for Xbox fans, and encourages you to tune in and watch then, too. “You’ll get in-depth updates from some of our previously announced Xbox Game Studios titles alongside some of our third-party partners, including some of the incredible titles coming to Xbox this holiday, upcoming releases to our monthly subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, and much more,” says a press release.
Codemasters has announced Grid Legends and it’s coming to current and new-gen consoles as well as PC. Grid Legends was announced during EA Play Live 2021 today, and it’s slated for release sometime next year. Featuring the series’ renowned race handling, the game will have you racing around traditional tracks and city circuits. It also features a race creator enabling you to select mixed-class vehicles and battle it out across all circuits, including new city locations, London and Moscow. The Grid World Series returns with this entry, during which you will face “fierce personalities, internal team politics and the infamous Ravenwest Motorsport,” and featured award-winning British actor Ncuti Gatwa. You can expect unique driver personality AI, 130 routes, including real-life tracks such as Brands Hatch and Indianapolis, Grid city circuits like San Francisco, Paris, and more. You can race and upgrade over 100 vehicles from classic touring cars to big rigs, single-seaters, and even stadium trucks. “Grid Legends combines everything our players love and adds more exhilarating race features, including our new epic story mode,” said Chris Smith, game director at Codemasters. “We’re giving players more variety and choice, whether that’s creating their ultimate races using our race creator or bringing back the community-requested Drift mode. “This is just the start of the journey, and we can’t wait to reveal more in the coming months.” Grid Legends will be made available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
Tom Clancy’s XDefiant is a newly announced free-to-play, fast-paced arena first-person shooter coming from Ubisoft San Francisco. After teasing the game for the past 24 hours, Ubisoft has finally announced the latest game in the Tom Clancy series: Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. Various Tom Clancy properties collide in the game, the arena shooter will take characters from series like The Division, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon to provide a hectic, competitive environment. XDefiant is planned to be a live service game, and Ubisoft has committed to supporting the game after launch and providing more content as time goes by. The game, from what we can discern from various trailers and leaked materials, appears to be the final name of the BattleCat project that leaked last month. Take a look at the debut trailer for the game below. You’ll have the ability to deploy a suite of gadgets and abilities, depending on your character and your position on the battlefield. Here’s the first set of characters you’ll be able to play: Wolves – Tanks inspired by Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Echelon – Support class inspired by Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Outcasts – Healers inspired by Tom Clancy’s The Division Cleaners – Assault class inspired by Tom Clancy’s The Division “Choose your faction, traits, abilities, and ultras,” says Ubisoft. “Select from an arsenal of primary and secondary weapons, attachments, and a device to complete your loadout – then tweak it on the fly to adapt to an ever-changing battlefield.” Class abilities and gadgets aside, Ubisoft is making a point of saying that this game is a “shooter first,” and the publisher seems to be prioritizing solid gunplay above all else. Let’s hope the success of Rainbow Six Siege can help steer this game in the right direction then. If you want to jump into the game and check out what’s going on for yourself, you’ll have the opportunity to try out the game for yourself from August 5 once a closed beta goes live. Simply head to the XDefiant beta site to learn more, and sign up now. “Our first closed test begins on August 5 for PC players in the US and Canada. More tests are coming soon, so be sure to register no matter where you play!”

Interesting. Can you pay for Xbox Game Pass and play the games in that library on a computer (or 3rd party streaming box or TV) without ever buying an Xbox? If so, can you purchase additional games to stream from Game Pass, a la Stadia’s model? Essentially - happy to pay a monthly fee, play, purchase a specific game from time to time but absolutely don’t want to have a physical gaming console.
Microsoft has announced that Xbox Game Pass will be streamed directly to your TV in the future through Cloud Gaming. While it reiterated that consoles remain the “flagship experience”, all that will be required to play Game Pass content on a compatible TV is a controller, without the need for additional hardware. The company is currently working with global TV manufacturers to embed the Xbox experience directly into internet-connected TVs, it told press this week. And it’s also building its own streaming devices to bring cloud gaming to any TV or monitor without the need for a console. That is likely to include a selection of fairly recent models, so Xbox will also release its own streaming devices that connect to a wider range of TVs and monitors. It sounds similar to a Chromecast with Google TV, as a dongle that smartens-up your screen. “Cloud is key to our hardware and Game Pass roadmaps, but no one should think we’re slowing down on our core console engineering. In fact, we’re accelerating it,” Xbox’s experiences and platforms boss Liz Hamren said during a video presentation. “We’re already hard at work on new hardware and platforms, some of which won’t come to light for years. “But even as we build for the future, we’re focused on extending the Xbox experience to more devices today so we can reach more people. And many of those devices won’t be built by us. For example, we’re working with global TV manufacturers to embed the Game Pass experience directly into internet-connected TVs, so all you’ll need to play is a controller. “Beyond that, we’re also developing standalone streaming devices that you can plug into a TV or monitor, so if you have a strong internet connection, you can stream your Xbox experience.” “We need to expand our audience beyond console, to new demographics and geographies we haven’t reached before, and provide meaningful value for that audience to choose to spend their money with us,” said CFO of Xbox Tim Stuart. Xbox confirmed Cloud Gaming will come to Xbox app on PC and web browsers this year. No timeframe was confirmed on when it would be integrated directly into TVs or when the streaming devices will be available.
Crytek today announced that a Crysis Remastered Trilogy will release for consoles and PC this fall. The Crysis Remastered Trilogy features the single-player remasters of Crysis, Crysis 2, and Crysis 3, optimized in partnership with Saber Interactive. The three-game bundle will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and for PC, with the game playing “even smoother” on next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Crysis Remastered is available for these platforms now, and the remasters of Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 will also be made available separately. “We’re excited to announce that these iconic Crysis games are returning in one bundle, remastered for a new generation of hardware,” said Steffen Halbig, project lead. “Each game is enhanced to look and play beautifully on today’s platforms, delivering the finest Crysis experience for both newcomers to our classic franchise or players wishing to relive the adventure.” The trilogy will allow you to play through the whole storyline from the very beginning with this all-in-one bundle, taking you to the North Korean islands to New York City. Your goal is to save humanity from a deadly virus and in the finale, you will be on a revenge mission to uncover the truth about C.E.L.L. The Crysis Trilogy includes: Crysis Remastered: A simple rescue mission turns into an all-out war as alien invaders swarm over a chain of North Korean islands. Playing as super-soldier Prophet, you are armed with a powerful Nanosuit equipped with Speed, Strength, Armor, and Cloaking abilities. Use a vast arsenal of modular weaponry and adapt your tactics and gear to dominate enemies in an enormous sandbox world. Crysis 2 Remastered: Aliens have returned to a world ravaged by climate disasters. As the invaders lay waste to New York and begin an assault that threatens the total annihilation of humankind, only you have the technology to lead the fightback. Equipped with the upgraded Nanosuit 2.0, customize your suit and weapons in real-time and unlock powerful abilities in the battle for humanity’s survival. Crysis 3 Remastered: New York City has been transformed into a sprawling urban rainforest sheltered by a giant nanodome. Prophet must fight through seven distinct districts against human and alien forces, using the Nanosuit’s superior technology to deploy brute force or opting for stealth to achieve his goals. Equipped with a deadly Predator Bow, there’s no wrong way to save the world. For more information about the Crysis Remastered Trilogy, visit the official website.
Summer Game Fest will return this year on Thursday, June 10. Summer Game Fest 2021 will kick off that day at 11am PT, 2pm ET, 7pm UK. The show will start off with a performance by Weezer, which will be premiering a brand new video game soundtrack song. You can also expect day one to include a Day of the Devs indie showcase with iam8bit, and of course some world premiers and other gaming goodness. Partners this year include 2K Games, Activision, Bandai Namco, Blizzard, Capcom, Devolver Digital, EA, Epic Games, Gearbox, Hi-Rez, PlayStation, Riot, Sega, Square Enix, Steam, Ubisoft, Warner, Xbox, and plenty of other developers and publishers. Organizer Geoff Keighley said to expect this year’s event to be “more condensed” than its debut in 2020. The first Summer Game Fest debuted last year in May and was a four-month-long series of events featuring news and games. This year’s event will also see Valve return with its demo-laden event Steam Next Fest and there’s also the EA Play Live event in July. Head here to learn more about Summer Game Fest. The event will be livestreamed across all popular livestream platforms.
Another slew of new FPS Boost enhanced games have come to next-gen Xbox consoles, bringing the total list to 97 titles. Notable FPS Boost games added lately include Halo Wars 2, Far Cry 5, and Assassin’s Creed Unity. FPS Boost is a next-gen Xbox feature that improves a backwards-compatible game’s framerate and performance by up to 120Hz. This feature works on Xbox Series X (and some games functions on Xbox Series S), with older Xbox One or Xbox 360 titles via backwards compatibility. The full list of FPS Boost-enhanced games can be seen here. For example, Assassin’s Creed Unity runs at 60Hz across Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, while Halo Wars 2 functions at 60Hz across both machines, as well. Other games like Battlefield 1 run at 120hz, but only on Xbox Series X, so it’s important to take a look at the full list to be sure if your console supports each game. Thanks to FPS Boost, players are able to take full advantage of their Xbox Series X consoles, allowing them to experience older Xbox games with enhanced visuals. Many of them are available via Xbox Game Pass and EA Play, as well. It’s worth considering that many games have the FPS Boost feature disabled by default on Xbox Series X (see the video in the post above). For instance, players will need to manually enable the feature with EA’s Anthem, as well as for Fallout 4, and Gears of War 4. Microsoft will continue to expand the list of FPS Boost enhanced Xbox games over time. The list of compatible games has grown tremendously since the feature was first implemented earlier this year.
EA Play will return this year, but not in June. EA has today announced that EA Play Live, the online version of its summer showcase event, will return this year. Unlike previous iterations, however, this year’s show will take place in July. EA Play Live 2021 takes place July 22, which is a month later than its usual spot. Though EA has not been part of E3 for years, the publisher always held EA Play in close proximity to E3 – including last year’s digital event. This announcement comes on the heels of Battlefield’s official channels hinting that the game’s initial unveiling will take place in June, and not in May as everyone expected going off EA’s history. We still expect the game’s full reveal to be part of EA Play Live’s line-up in July, it just seems everything got moved back one month. Battlefield is, of course, EA’s biggest game this year. Outside of that, you can expect the usual line-up of sports games and EA Originals titles. Though they’re still early in development, we could also get another look at Dragon Age 4, Skate 4 and perhaps something form the recently-acquired Codemasters.
