It appears Ubisoft is moving forward with a new "AAA" Rayman game following last year's "exploration phase." Recent job listings have confirmed that Ubisoft Milan is actively seeking talent, including a 3D gameplay animator and a senior game designer, to work on this prestigious title. In October 2022, Ubisoft acknowledged the formation of a small team to explore the Rayman franchise, with the involvement of developers from the now-disbanded Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team. Their initial work on a remake of Rayman seemed promising enough for Ubisoft to greenlight full development. The announcement has generated excitement among fans, especially considering the success of the studios involved, such as Ubisoft Montpellier and Milan, known for hits like Mario + Rabbids and Rayman Legends. However, there are concerns regarding the involvement of original Rayman creator Michel Ancel, whose past accusations of toxic leadership led to his departure from Ubisoft. Although he was initially brought on as a consultant, his current status with the project remains unclear. Amidst these developments, Ubisoft has been navigating challenges, including layoffs and studio closures, while also focusing on its major franchises. The revival of Rayman could signify a strategic move to bolster their portfolio as they address recent setbacks. For Rayman enthusiasts, this news is a ray of hope, hinting at a potential return to form for one of gaming's beloved characters. Ubisoft confirms full development of a new Rayman game. Job listings indicate search for key positions in the project. Original creator Michel Ancel's involvement raises concerns. Ubisoft continues to navigate challenges in the gaming industry. Revival signals potential strengthening of Ubisoft's franchise strategy.

The Last Ninja Collection has obliterated its crowdfunding goal in a little under one hour. The Last Ninja is a puzzle, fighting, and action-adventure game all in one. First released for the Commodore 64, it puts you in the tabi of burgeoning ninja Armakuni, whose quest is to assassinate the evil shogun and retrieve an ancient, powerful scroll. Combat is challenging and varied – particularly for a game from 1987, The Last Ninja boasts a sizable variety of weapons, including shurikens and smoke bombs, and your enemies get considerably stronger with each new zone. A game of the year winner back in the day, it catalyzed the entire Last Ninja series, which is now making a valiant return thanks to a big new collection. Created by System 3, the independent developer behind the original game, The Last Ninja Collection contains seven hits, including the entire Last Ninja series, the re-released version, Ninja Remix, and the beat 'em ups International Karate, IK+, and Bangkok Knights. The collection was only launched on Kickstarter on Tuesday September 10, but in less than an hour it's already been fully funded – in fact, as of this writing, it's more than doubled its funding goal. The Last Ninja Collection is coming to PC in 2025. If you want to contribute to the crowdfunding campaign in the meantime, just head here.

Seems like Resident Evil 9 won't be the next Capcom game.... The next game coming from Capcom in the Resident Evil franchise won't be Resident Evil 9. Instead, the studio is working on remakes of Resident Evil Code Veronica and Resident Evil Zero. According to notable leaker Dusk Golem, both titles have been in development and will be the next games to release. "I've talked to many others behind the scenes about this at this point, it's something I heard over a year ago, think it was going to get out whether I was the one to say it or not, & that's about it," they said. Released originally for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000, Code Veronica was the first game in the series to release on a different platform before coming to PlayStation. Zero also released on a different platform first, launching in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube as an exclusive. It eventually made it's way to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in 2016.
Electronic Arts is increasing the price for its EA Play subscription service. The standard EA Play tier will increase from £3.99 per month to £5.99, with the annual fee rising from £19.99 to £35.99. Meanwhile, the EA Play Pro subscription — which gives users extra in-game rewards and perks, as well as access to all of the publisher's latest games as soon as they launch — is increasing from £14.99 to £16.99, with the annual membership up to £109.99 from £89.99. An email detailing the changes is being issued to subscribers today, explaining that the new prices will come into effect as of May 10, 2024. These changes are being made to reflect changes in currency value and to bring fees in line with market value. EA's decision follows similar moves by other publishers. Microsoft increased the cost of Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions last July, while Sony pushed up the price of its annual PlayStation Plus membership in September.
As is the norm, there were some sweet looking titles in today's Annapurna showcase. A new Bladerunner game from Annapurna themselves is very exciting, although we didn't learn too much about it. Lushfoil Photography Sim looks gorgeous too. Ghost Bike is worth a look as it's from the maker of Nidhogg. Oh, and Cocoon gets a September release date, and Stray is coming to Xbox. https://www.gameinformer.com/news/2023/06/29/everything-announced-during-todays-annapurna-interactive-showcase
I think the issue is more about people who are emotionally susceptible to certain psychological disorders that predispose them to be more violent. Basically, some people have the inability to separate the two, for the regular mentally healthy person I don’t think video games create violence. But I don’t think it’s entirely impossible that certain people could support their violent tendencies with violent video games.
In an official joint statement from the ESA and new event organisers for 2023, ReedPop, E3 “did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.” Kyle Marsden-Kish, Global VP of Gaming for ReedPop, shared that, “This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3.” “We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn’t overcome. For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t put on the showcase you deserve and that you’ve come to expect from ReedPop’s event experiences,” they conclude. Unfortunately, over the past few weeks, a series of publishers announced they would not be attending the event. This includes Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, with Ubisoft, Sega, and Tencent more recently announcing the companies would not be attending. E3 2023 was set to be the first in-person E3 event in four years. After COVID took its toll globally, the event was cancelled in 2020, with a digital-only event being hosted online in 2021. The 2022 event was also cancelled, with it being announced in July 2022 that E3 would be opening its doors again, for in-person interactions and showcases, in 2023. ReedPop and the ESA has said that it will, “continue to work together on future E3 events.”
