Microsoft has announced that Xbox Game Pass will be streamed directly to your TV in the future through Cloud Gaming. While it reiterated that consoles remain the “flagship experience”, all that will be required to play Game Pass content on a compatible TV is a controller, without the need for additional hardware. The company is currently working with global TV manufacturers to embed the Xbox experience directly into internet-connected TVs, it told press this week. And it’s also building its own streaming devices to bring cloud gaming to any TV or monitor without the need for a console. That is likely to include a selection of fairly recent models, so Xbox will also release its own streaming devices that connect to a wider range of TVs and monitors. It sounds similar to a Chromecast with Google TV, as a dongle that smartens-up your screen. “Cloud is key to our hardware and Game Pass roadmaps, but no one should think we’re slowing down on our core console engineering. In fact, we’re accelerating it,” Xbox’s experiences and platforms boss Liz Hamren said during a video presentation. “We’re already hard at work on new hardware and platforms, some of which won’t come to light for years. “But even as we build for the future, we’re focused on extending the Xbox experience to more devices today so we can reach more people. And many of those devices won’t be built by us. For example, we’re working with global TV manufacturers to embed the Game Pass experience directly into internet-connected TVs, so all you’ll need to play is a controller. “Beyond that, we’re also developing standalone streaming devices that you can plug into a TV or monitor, so if you have a strong internet connection, you can stream your Xbox experience.” “We need to expand our audience beyond console, to new demographics and geographies we haven’t reached before, and provide meaningful value for that audience to choose to spend their money with us,” said CFO of Xbox Tim Stuart. Xbox confirmed Cloud Gaming will come to Xbox app on PC and web browsers this year. No timeframe was confirmed on when it would be integrated directly into TVs or when the streaming devices will be available.
Crytek today announced that a Crysis Remastered Trilogy will release for consoles and PC this fall. The Crysis Remastered Trilogy features the single-player remasters of Crysis, Crysis 2, and Crysis 3, optimized in partnership with Saber Interactive. The three-game bundle will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and for PC, with the game playing “even smoother” on next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Crysis Remastered is available for these platforms now, and the remasters of Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 will also be made available separately. “We’re excited to announce that these iconic Crysis games are returning in one bundle, remastered for a new generation of hardware,” said Steffen Halbig, project lead. “Each game is enhanced to look and play beautifully on today’s platforms, delivering the finest Crysis experience for both newcomers to our classic franchise or players wishing to relive the adventure.” The trilogy will allow you to play through the whole storyline from the very beginning with this all-in-one bundle, taking you to the North Korean islands to New York City. Your goal is to save humanity from a deadly virus and in the finale, you will be on a revenge mission to uncover the truth about C.E.L.L. The Crysis Trilogy includes: Crysis Remastered: A simple rescue mission turns into an all-out war as alien invaders swarm over a chain of North Korean islands. Playing as super-soldier Prophet, you are armed with a powerful Nanosuit equipped with Speed, Strength, Armor, and Cloaking abilities. Use a vast arsenal of modular weaponry and adapt your tactics and gear to dominate enemies in an enormous sandbox world. Crysis 2 Remastered: Aliens have returned to a world ravaged by climate disasters. As the invaders lay waste to New York and begin an assault that threatens the total annihilation of humankind, only you have the technology to lead the fightback. Equipped with the upgraded Nanosuit 2.0, customize your suit and weapons in real-time and unlock powerful abilities in the battle for humanity’s survival. Crysis 3 Remastered: New York City has been transformed into a sprawling urban rainforest sheltered by a giant nanodome. Prophet must fight through seven distinct districts against human and alien forces, using the Nanosuit’s superior technology to deploy brute force or opting for stealth to achieve his goals. Equipped with a deadly Predator Bow, there’s no wrong way to save the world. For more information about the Crysis Remastered Trilogy, visit the official website.
Another slew of new FPS Boost enhanced games have come to next-gen Xbox consoles, bringing the total list to 97 titles. Notable FPS Boost games added lately include Halo Wars 2, Far Cry 5, and Assassin’s Creed Unity. FPS Boost is a next-gen Xbox feature that improves a backwards-compatible game’s framerate and performance by up to 120Hz. This feature works on Xbox Series X (and some games functions on Xbox Series S), with older Xbox One or Xbox 360 titles via backwards compatibility. The full list of FPS Boost-enhanced games can be seen here. For example, Assassin’s Creed Unity runs at 60Hz across Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, while Halo Wars 2 functions at 60Hz across both machines, as well. Other games like Battlefield 1 run at 120hz, but only on Xbox Series X, so it’s important to take a look at the full list to be sure if your console supports each game. Thanks to FPS Boost, players are able to take full advantage of their Xbox Series X consoles, allowing them to experience older Xbox games with enhanced visuals. Many of them are available via Xbox Game Pass and EA Play, as well. It’s worth considering that many games have the FPS Boost feature disabled by default on Xbox Series X (see the video in the post above). For instance, players will need to manually enable the feature with EA’s Anthem, as well as for Fallout 4, and Gears of War 4. Microsoft will continue to expand the list of FPS Boost enhanced Xbox games over time. The list of compatible games has grown tremendously since the feature was first implemented earlier this year.

Electronic Arts has announced its ‘next-gen golf game’, EA Sports PGA Tour, that will likely target PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X consoles. The game is currently in development over at EA’s Tiburon studio – you may recognize the name as the same studio behind the NBA Live and Madden franchises under the EA Sports label – and no launch date has been provided at the time of writing. In a new blog post uploaded by the publisher, it’s noted that the game will be built in Frostbite engine, which will allow the studio to bring “stunning fidelity, breathtaking immersive environments, and approachable, dynamic gameplay” to the title whilst taking advantage of the processing power of the new generation of console hardware. “EA Sports and the PGA Tour have created some of the most memorable golf video game experiences together, and we couldn’t be more excited to expand our sports portfolio with a new golf title on next-gen hardware,” EA Sports general manager Cam Weber says in the update. “Our team of passionate golf fans is meticulously recreating the world’s top courses such as Pebble Beach, and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to compete on some of the most iconic PGA TOUR courses and win the FedExCup.” “We’ve partnered with EA Sports to bring immersive golf video game experiences to fans of all ages for years,” continues PGA Tour’s licensing and merchandising boss, Len Brown. “We are thrilled to continue working with EA Sports on its golf franchise to authentically represent the PGA Tour for the next generation. The newest game will give golf fans another way to experience their favorite sport, or to discover their passion for it.” Though any actual information about the title is scarce right now, EA has promised more updates – including a release date – will be shared in the coming months. Platforms haven’t been announced for the game in the initial reveal, but it stands to reason that it’ll be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X consoles, as well as PC.

The showcase highlighted several anticipated ID@Xbox games by speaking to the developers. Moonglow Bay is a wholesome fishing RPG set along the 1980s Eastern Canadian coastline. Players will explore the furthest reaches of the ocean as they learn to cast nets, set traps, and fish while documenting over 100 aquatic species. Soup Pot is a cooking game with a focus on creativity. The game aims to capture the open nature of home cooking, allowing experimentation across over 100 different dishes. Nobody Saves The World is a new twist on Action RPGs. Players can transform into different forms as they explore dozens of dangerous dungeons slaying horrendous monsters on the quest to save the world. Among Us is coming to Xbox later this year. The game is an online and local party game of teamwork and betrayal for 4-10 players. Death’s Door is a fantasy action-adventure set in a world where Crows are in charge of reaping the souls of the dead, operating from their headquarters known as the Hall of Doors. 12 Minutes is coming soon to Xbox. The game revolves around a husband caught in a 12-minute time loop where he and his wife get caught up in a violent invasion as a man breaks into the home, accuses the wife of murder, and beats the husband to death. Astria Ascending is a turn-based JRPG set in a world where chaos looms. Players will take control of the Demigods – eight heroes charged with the fate of the world. Each character has their own story, explored across 5 cities, 25 dungeons, and up to 50 hours of gameplay.
Microsoft has done some light rebranding of Xbox Live. Microsoft has officially confirmed that Xbox Live, the network in use by Xbox consoles and Windows 10, will be known as Xbox network (yes, with a lowercase ‘N’) going forward. The platform holder told The Verge that it’s doing this in order to “distinguish the underlying service from Xbox Live Gold memberships.” This follows Xbox users noticing the new Xbox network branding on their console’s dashboard. Microsoft updated its services agreement last August to refer to Xbox Live simply as ‘Xbox online service’, a move that some took to mean the company was getting ready to drop Xbox Live Gold and re-anchor its online offerings around Game Pass. Microsoft denied that at the time, and later went on to raise Gold prices in January. It didn’t take long for the overwhelmingly negative reaction to rise, forcing Microsoft to reverse course and announce that free-to-play games will soon no longer require a Gold subscription. This change is intended to arrive this year, though Microsoft hasn’t revealed any details on that since.
Microsoft has announced the first set of backwards compatible titles to take advantage of FPS Boost. The team at Microsoft has added enhancements to backwards compatible titles by developing FPS Boost, which employs a variety of new methods for nearly doubling the original framerate on select titles. This results in higher, steadier framerates to make games visually smoother. Games that will benefit from FPS Boost first, starting today, are Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, UFC 4, and Watch Dogs 2. Microsoft said it chose these titles because they are popular with players, and to also highlight “several different ways” FPS Boost can improve the experience. This means New Super Lucky’s Tale can now run up to 120fps, and UFC 4 can now run at 60fps. More titles to feature FPS Boost will be announced and released soon. This spring, the firm will also roll out new menu icons and system settings via system update where you can go to “Manage Game” to find a “Compatibility Options” button that will allow you to toggle FPS Boost on or off. There will also be a new indicator informing you when a game is running with FPS Boost whenever you hit the Xbox button on your controller. Many of these FPS Boost games will also be made available in Xbox Game Pass. New Super Lucky’s Tale and Sniper Elite 4 are both currently available with Xbox Game Pass.
The new Xbox Series X/S controller can easily switch between the different devices you use it with. As pointed out by Microsoft’s global customer success account manager Timo Wolf, the gamepad can remember which what it has been connected to. Holding the controller’s sync button will hook it up to the last mobile device or PC it was used with, with the controller flashing two or three times. Meanwhile, double-tapping the sync button will connect it to your Xbox console. This isn’t a new feature; Wolf points out that a Reddit post made on November 18 last year discusses this functionality. It’s a handy thing to know given that people can play games across their Xbox consoles, Windows 10 PCs and on mobile devices thanks to Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming streaming service. The new Xbox Series X and S controller was revealed in March 2020. This new gamepad came with a brand new D-Pad with Microsoft apparently making it easier to hold than its predecessor. Though they boast a number of improvements, Microsoft is apparently asking Xbox owners whether its new controllers feel “next-gen” enough. In particular, the company wanted to see what people thought about the rival PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and the innovations it introduced including improved haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
It's promising that they listened to feedback around this, but still disappointing they thought it was something to do anyway. It's caused them a huge negative backlash. It's inevitable that Game Pass will increase in price at some point. There's no way they can feasibly charge £8 a month forever after acquiring studios like Bethesda for however many billion and massive new games like Halo, Fable etc. going straight on Game Pass for no fee. I wouldn't mind paying a tenner, for example, if the stream of games is consistently really, really good. A 100% price increase on Gold was just lunacy though.

Microsoft has reassured Final Fantasy fans that more games in the franchise are coming to Xbox Game Pass. Speaking with TrueAchievements, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that missing Final Fantasy titles announced at X019 are still heading to the Xbox Game Pass service. “As we announced at X019, we are excited to bring the Final Fantasy franchise to gamers with Xbox Game Pass,” the spokesperson told TrueAchievements. “We have done so throughout 2020 and will continue to do so in 2021 and beyond. We look forward to announcing specific launch dates for more Final Fantasy titles in the future.” X019 took place back in November 2019, and Microsoft said at the time 10 Final Fantasy titles were coming to the service. At present, only five of the titles have graced Xbox Game Pass: Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8 Remastered, Final Fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy 15, plus Final Fantasy 15 Multiplayer: Comrades. That leaves Final Fantasy 10: HD Remastered, Final Fantasy 10-2: HD Remastered, Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13-2, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 to be added. It’s good news to hear that these are still planned, although why they missed 2020 remains a mystery. The original graphic, released during the trade show, clearly states that the planned time period was 2020 for all the announced Final Fantasy titles. Microsoft’s statement including “and beyond” could even mean that some miss 2021.
Xbox Game Pass already got a big upgrade this year with EA Play being added to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions on top of all the games that are routinely added, and if a new rumour plays out as people hope it will, there might be another subscription to look forward to next year. The new rumour about Xbox Game Pass plans for 2021 suggests that the Ubisoft+ service that offers people instant access to over 100 Ubisoft games for a flat rate will also be added to Xbox Game Pass, likely through the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions as EA Play was. Rumors about Xbox Game Pass getting Ubisoft+ subscriptions rolled into the package circulated online this week with many crediting the Xbox Worlds site as the source. Though the rumour may have been entertained in forums and other discussions, Xbox Worlds included it in a list of the biggest supposed Xbox rumours going around right now. That alone isn’t much to bolster the rumor since theories like these float around discussion boards and forums frequently, but others have weighed in to make the rumor now seem more probable. Windows Central’s Jez Corden who has a good track record with Windows and Xbox-focused news said he believes there’s a “strong chance” of the rumors being accurate based on what he’s heard. The point about Ubisoft+ possibly adding a smaller selection of games to Xbox Game Pass as opposed to its entire vault is one that’s been suggested online alongside the initial rumour. Considering how many games Ubisoft offers through the service and how it gets new Ubisoft releases at launch just as Xbox Game Pass does with first-party games, that would make a lot of Xbox owners far less inclined to purchase new Ubisoft releases on day one. EA Play functions similarly to both services though and was included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions with no caveats, so there’s always the chance that the same could happen with Ubisoft+ next year.
With how integral Game Pass has become to the Xbox experience, the question of family sharing was bound to follow. Xbox Game Pass is one of the best values for any subscription service in games, but what if it could offer an even better deal for families? That’s what one Xbox owner asked the company, and the answer was surprisingly open. The ever-responsive head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, was asked on Twitter if Microsoft considered offering a solution for households with multiple Xbox consoles, if they wanted to share a single Xbox Game Pass subscription. Other subscription services, such as Spotify and Apple’s various services, offer a family option that unlocks all benefits for multiple users (usually five) in the same family, for a little bit more money. According to Spencer, offering a family tier of Xbox Game Pass is something Microsoft actually wants to do. “It’s something we’d like to do,” Spencer replied on Twitter. “There is Home Console feature for one console household but for multiple family members with consoles a family plan would help. Really appreciate the feedback.” Obviously, this isn’t confirmation that a family plan is coming to Xbox Game Pass, but it’s great to that see Microsoft isn’t opposed to the idea. Considering the value the company keeps adding to Game Pass, with things like game streaming, and the addition of EA Play, it’s very possible a family option will arrive down the line.

Microsoft commits to constantly updating its new consoles. A new update for Microsoft’s Xbox consoles allows users to install Game Pass titles before they are out. In a post on Xbox Wire, the firm said that you’ll be able to download games that haven’t been released yet via the Game Pass app on. You just need to head to the ‘Coming soon’ section to find upcoming titles. Not all releases in this section can be pre-installed, but you can queue the ones that can’t be downloaded ahead of launch to be installed on release. That’s not everything that this new update includes. You can now personalise your Xbox Series X or Series S with dynamic backgrounds, while new badges show which games are using Auto HDR and which releases are optimised for Microsoft’s new consoles. Players can also check their achievements from the Game Activity menu tab and add family member accounts when you set up your Xbox console for the first time. "This month marked the start of the next generation of console gaming on Xbox with the release of Xbox Series X|S, and Team Xbox is excited to continue bringing new ways to make your experience on Xbox even better," Xbox Experiences principal program manager Jonathan Hildebrandt wrote. "Just like we’ve done on Xbox One, we will continue to periodically release software updates designed to improve your Xbox gaming experience based on your feedback, including both delivering you new features and fixing bugs."
Crossfire X, the Xbox-exclusive shooter, was always intended for release this year. It never really had a solid date, of course, so you may not be surprised to learn that it has been pushed back to 2021. The game’s official Twitter account broke the news today, citing challenges of developing the game amidst a global pandemic. “After much deliberation, and in consideration of the challenges faced by the Smilegate development team due to COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to delay the release of Crossfire X to 2021. “Moving our release will allow us to deliver the Crossfire experience on console our team set out to create. We’ll have more to share in the future,” reads the statement posted on Twitter. The game being referred to here is both the single-player campaign, developed by Remedy, as well as the multiplayer mode. Both are exclusive to Xbox, for now at least, but players only managed to get their hands on the multiplayer portion thanks to a beta held in the summer.
