Battlefield 2042 gameplay community feedback patch updates multiplayer modes

Initial excitement surrounded the reveal of Battlefield 2042, highlighting its focus on next-gen capabilities and multiplayer features. Fans eagerly anticipated new gameplay modes and the promising return of vast battlefields, but concerns arose early when it was revealed that the game would forgo a traditional single-player campaign.12

As the open beta launched, backlash quickly mounted with many players reporting matchmaking issues, bugs, and a lack of core features such as a scoreboard. This led to calls for delays and refunds, with the community expressing frustration over the perceived failure to meet expectations.34

In response to criticism, DICE began releasing patches aimed at addressing player concerns and improving the game, with some players expressing cautious optimism about future developments. Despite ongoing issues, a dedicated community remains hopeful for the game's long-term potential through future content updates and seasonal changes.56

"Not having a scoreboard... is absolutely ridiculous."

Verdict

The thread reflects a divided community, with some players dissatisfied and others hopeful for improvements. Ongoing support and updates will be crucial for restoring player trust.

EA has said that Battlefield 6 "takes full advantage of the power of next-generation platforms", and that the game is on track for an early 2021 reveal and holiday release (between September-December 2021).

EA CEO Andrew Wilson shared more details about Battlefield 6 in an earnings call with investors. Wilson said that Battlefield 6 will tap into the horsepower of both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which should "bring massive and immersive battles to life with more players than ever".

Wilson also added that Battlefield 6 will feature maps "with unprecedented scale" and that "the next vision of Battlefield takes all the destruction, player agency, and vehicle and weapon combat that the franchise is known for and elevates it to another level."

Battlefield 6 has been tipped for a holiday 2021 release date, and it appears that will be the case. Battlefield tends to release between September and November of each year, and Wilson confirmed the game will arrive in the holiday season.

"We will reveal the game in the spring and deliver the defining Battlefield experience for our players in the 2021 holiday season," Wilson said.

While Battlefield is still one of the biggest games of the year, it's fair to say that the latest iteration, Battlefield 5, didn't quite resonate as strongly with the game's player base as previous titles.

Much like Call of Duty, there's always a back and forth over the direction and setting of each title, with some players preferring a more military-focused game, while others would like to see a more modern, futuristic depiction.

For those in the more traditional camp, Wilson has said the next Battlefield game will "mark a return to all-out military warfare", which should please the purists.

Here's a summary of the info shared by EA.
  • It will take full advantage of next-gen consoles
  • Feature more players than ever before
  • Takes franchise to the next level
  • Reveal coming in Spring 2021
  • Release set for Holiday 2021
There are a few games now with 100 players (Squad, WW3, HLL and lol Arma 3)

With varying degrees of success, all of those games bar WW3 require comms and umm a 100 players.

Today's news only came with the brief teaser you see above, which was posted across Battlefield's social media channels. There's plenty we don't know about the highly-anticipated next game in the series. This teaser suggests it'll be called Battlefield, rather than Battlefield 6, but we're going to wait until the full reveal before we start calling it that.

EA has revealed the next iteration of its massive multiplayer shooter series. Battlefield 2042 launches later this year on October 22 with development handled by Dice, Criterion, Dice LA, and EA Gothenburg. Coming to both PS4 and PS5, it continues the series' ambitious trajectory of incorporating cutting-edge tech to increase the size and density of its sandboxes, while retooling and expanding its vast armory of gameplay modes and mechanics.

It boasts one of the biggest maps in the series to date. The real-time unpredictability of extreme weather systems that'll tear through the frontline. Enhanced terrain deformation. And, on PS5, a 128-player count per match. This is Dice's proprietary game engine Frostbite flexing all-new processing muscle acquired in the two or so years since last entry Battlefield V.

It also marks the franchise's return to (near) modern day. The real-world yet fictitious setting pitches a "what if" scenario of societies crumbling in the face of violent climate changes and diminishing resources. Stateless soldiers ("No-Pat Specialists") now fight on behalf of the remaining superpowers. The setup is close enough to today to be recognisable, but far enough in the future to include advanced arsenals and destructive weather patterns. Fitting though with the series' 20th anniversary coming up, that EA offers a nod – unintentional or otherwise – to franchise starter Battlefield 1942 in its selection of year.

There are three gameplay pillars – "experiences"- to 2042. Only two have been named. Of that pair only All Out Warfare is the focus of this first look, debuting with a duo of familiar modes. Hazard Zone, as well as the mystery third pillar – in development at Dice LA – will get their full reveal at a later date. Dice reinforce Hazard Zone is something all-new for the franchise: a modern take on multiplayer that's a "high-stakes, squad-based game type". The studio is emphatic in stressing it isn't a battle royale mode.

As ever, there'll be a fleet of vehicles to jump into during matches. Players will have access to a call-in tablet, letting them request a land-based vehicle to anywhere on the map. They can be deadly even before you hop in: Dice example pinpointing a tank to land onto an enemy sniper position.

So, those two All Out Warfare modes. Conquest has two teams duking it out on a huge space, with epic clashes and more personal frays playing out in pockets across a map. Breakthrough also drops two opposing sides into a single location, but is more guided: maps are divided up into sectors, in which there are multiple capture points. Attacking or defending sides need to hold points to flip sectors and shift an ever-moving frontline in their favour. Want time to get adjusted to what's new and test things out? You can launch both modes with AI squadmates (and Dice confirms doing so still contributes to your overall progress).

One of the earliest revelations the developer made at the event was confirming that Battlefield 2042 will not have a traditional single-player campaign. The game is instead going to infuse narrative into its various multiplayer modes.

Specifics about how this is going to manifest weren't shared, but the developer said the story of the game's world will evolve with every new season.

Since the original Bad Company, DICE has included a single-player campaign with every mainline Battlefield. Over the years, the developer switched the format of those campaigns – from a core narrative following set characters, to an anthology of separate tales whose events and characters rarely intersect.

Battlefield 2042 will be the first mainline entry since then to eschew that mode altogether, but this won't necessarily make it a smaller game. DICE also revealed that Battlefield 2042 has three separate multiplayer experiences.

At a pre-reveal event, DICE was particularly excited about one key feature that's going to completely change how people play the game. Battlefield 2042's All-Out Warfare game modes can be experienced entirely without real players.

In other words, anyone can launch a game of 128-player Conquest or Breakthrough, on any of the supported maps, and immediately play alongside and against AI. This also works as a quasi-co-op mode, where players can group up with friends as they experience the full scale of what the game has to offer, all against non-human players.

The even bigger news is that progression earned while playing with and against the AI will contribute towards your character and weapon unlocks.

DICE said it views this as the tutorial many newcomers have long wanted Battlefield to have. Giving players the freedom to experience Battlefield multiplayer's maps and modes, and learn to use its weapons and operate its vehicles at their own pace, is exactly what the developer wanted to achieve with this feature.

It also marks the grand return of a classic Battlefield feature that's been long forgotten. Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2, and Battlefield 2142 all actually allowed players to recreate the chaos of multiplayer with AI bots, but the feature has been MIA since. I remember spending a lot of time playing those classic games with bots late into their life cycles, particularly as server population dwindled and admin abuse ran rampant

DICE has outright confirmed that Battlefield 2042 will have its version of the popular battle pass system. At a pre-reveal event attended by VG247, the developer said that the game's battle pass will feature the traditional free and paid tracks.

As players have come to expect from this proven model, Battlefield 2042's implementation will allow non-owners of the pass to access all meaningful gameplay content. The model also insures future maps and modes will remain free for all players.

There is the sense that DICE wants to hit the ground the running with the game's post-launch support. The studio shared an early look at the roadmap for Year One, which will unfold over four seasons.

Each season will add a new chapter to multiplayer's evolving story, and introduce a new Specialist – 2042's unique characters.

Each year in the game's live service will also bring new locations, but the developer only really discussed Specialists as the highlight for every season. Of course, you can expect a new battle pass for every season, which unlocks a host of cosmetic content for use in-game.

There's still plenty we don't know about a soldier and character customisation in Battlefield 2042, such as whether cosmetics will be character-neutral, and the extent to which DICE will go to create unique items. But we'll have to wait until the studio is ready to talk progression later in the year.

Looks really good, will try the beta before buying though. All I need now is an Xbox Series X to play it on.

Like its predecessors, Battlefield 2042 will host alpha and beta tests.

DICE has confirmed that the first time Battlefield 2042 will be publicly playable is going to be through a limited alpha test, which goes live sometime in early July.

Unfortunately, you can't directly sign up to play the alpha. Instead, DICE will email random, long-time Battlefield players those invites. This setup should be familiar to Battlefield fans, as it's one DICE utilised in the past for its alpha tests.

Unlike those games, however, the Battlefield 2042's alpha environments will be entirely grey boxed, meaning you won't see any textures on the map or the various objects. If you're cool with that, then you're probably going to enjoy the alpha. The goal of this test is to put balance and technical performance through their paces, and you won't be able to share any footage from your time with it.

DICE also confirmed that yes, there's going to be a beta test sometime ahead of the game's launch. Players who pre-order will get early access to the open beta, as is standard. Not much else is known about the beta, such as content and general timing.

I'm reading people saying they won't buy day one because not having single player devalues it despite the fact that these people favour multiplayer. It's crazy to me that people still live by quantity over quality when it comes to price.
