Activision has officially confirmed the name of this year's Call of Duty. This year's game is titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Over the past few days, the company has been running a big ARG that involved sending Call of Duty YouTubers slide projectors, which would later point them to spots on maps from Black Ops 4 and others in Warzone. Though casual players may have spotted some teasers, the hardcore were tracking ciphers and participating in a collective attempt to decode the various messages.

All of that has culminated with the unlocking of an unlisted trailer on the official Call of Duty YouTube channel, which confirms Wednesday, August 26 as the date of the official reveal. The trailer features footage from a real, 1984 interview with KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov, interspersed with footage of global unrest.

The game's events will seemingly be inspired by real-world events more than earlier Black Ops games. The trailer briefly touches on an embedded Soviet spy codenamed Perseus, another real figure whose identity remains unknown.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a sequel to the original Back Ops, according to leaked description.

This week's Warzone and Modern Warfare patch apparently also included a number of new details about the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

The information, published by COD Tracker, includes the game's full description, as well as its various editions, which will seemingly be up for pre-order tomorrow following the game's official reveal.

The official blurb confirms that Cold War takes place in the early 1980s, after the events of the original Black Ops, with series characters Woods, Mason and Hudson all returning. They will be joined by a new cast of heroes, all on the trail of a spy named Perseus. The journey will take them to East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey and KGB HQ.

Beyond these campaign details, the leak also confirms the return of Zombies, and the "next generation" of multiplayer – all using Cold War-era weaponry.

There will be three editions available for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

The PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Battle.net have Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War up for pre-order.

There's, of course, the Standard Edition (59.99 £/$), but there is also a Cross-Gen Bundle (£64.99/$69.99)and an Ultimate Edition (89.99 £/$) which will be made available.

The Cross-Gen Bundle digital option allows you to download the next-gen version at no extra cost when it launches. Pre-order any digital edition and receive Early access to the Open Beta, Operator Frank Woods, and an assault rifle Weapon Blueprint for immediate use in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone.

The Cross-Gen Bundle also includes the Confrontation Weapons Pack.

Buying the Ultimate Edition comes with the next-gen version at no extra cost when it launches. Like the Cross-Gen Bundle, it includes early access to the Open Beta Operator Frank Woods and an assault rifle Weapon Blueprint for immediate use in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone.

It was also announced today you can expect free multiplayer and Zombies post-launch content.

Revealed today after earlier leaks, the game was finally revealed within Warzone as a sequel to the first Black Ops title.

The game takes place in 1981 and features a conspiracy story, where "deception and subterfuge" make up the single-player campaign, developed by Raven Software.

You will encounter historic figures and learn "hard truths" as you battle through locales like East Berlin, Turkey, Vietnam, Soviet-era Moscow, and more.

Your goal is to stop a plot "decades in the making" as they follow the trail of Perseus, who is on a mission to destabilize the global balance of power and change the course of history.

As mentioned, the title features cross-play support across current and next-generation systems with cross-progression across all modes. It will also offer a Battle Pass system and free post-launch content, including multiplayer maps and modes, Zombies experiences, and in-game community events.

It will also build on and support Warzone, and includes shared progression features with Warzone, adding brand new inventory items that can be used in both games. Worry not: Warzone player will still have access to all of Modern Warefare content including Operators and Weapon Blueprints previously earned.

Starting today, pre-ordering or pre-purchasing digital versions will instantly unlock digital rewards, including Black Ops Operator Frank Woods now, and provide early access to the Cold War multiplayer open beta.

Open beta dates are to be announced soon. Multiplayer will be revealed on September 9 on Twitch.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will allow you to create your own character, and choices made during the campaign will have a direct effect on its ending.

When creating your character, you will be able to choose from options such as skin tone, psychological profile, and gender. You can also leave them as classified, which will provide the character with gender-neutral pronouns, according to Eurogamer.

Some options will do more than just affect your appearance, as some will affect gameplay. For example, your psychological profile of "paranoid" will cut the time it takes to aim down your sights in half. Being a lone wolf will allow you to sprint for a longer duration.

Many missions will allow you to take different paths to complete an objective, and there will be some dialogue options during the story. Such choices will affect not only how the story plays out, but the ending as well.

There are also be more linear missions thrown in there, so expect a mix of the two.

Not really a fan of Call of Duty games. I haven't played one since Advanced Warfare but the trailer looks good and the setting interests me.

While we're getting the official Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal next week, it seems beta news has made its way out even before that. Thanks to an in-store leak, the Black Ops Cold War beta launch date is now known as October 8, and same as in past Call of Duty betas, the PS4 version will get first dibs!

In an update issued for Call of Duty WWII, Treyarch has added some promotional pre-order links for Black Ops Cold War. Tucked in the description is the official start date for the Black ops Cold War Alpha.

As you can see, it clearly states that early access to the open beta begins on the PS4 on October 8. If this follows the yearly Call of Duty beta roll out, then other platforms can expect it a week after on October 15. Of course, given this isn't an official announcement by Activision, take it with a grain of salt. That said since it was taken and shown on the WWII in-game shop, this is most likely, certainly the real deal.

The multiplayer reveal for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War took place today, and here are the details.

As detailed through Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal, the map design will be rooted in "the game's realistic and historical setting," putting you smack in the middle of ab early 1980s Cold War narrative.

Multiplayer maps will take you to the Angolan desert, frozen lakes of Uzbekistan, the streets of South Beach Miami, and the North Atlantic waters and event to Moscow.

Treyarch called this a small array of maps that will be available at launch.

Here's a quick rundown of some of the maps:

• Armada: Based on Operation Azorian, U.S. and Soviet forces arrive in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean in search of a prototype nuclear submarine. The scale of the Cold War could be tipped in favour of whoever salvages it, whether it be the Soviets reclaiming it or the U.S. intercepting it. Zipline from ship to ship or command gunboats to turn the tide of the fight.
• Crossroads: At a pivotal route to Afghanistan deep in Uzbekistan, NATO forces are mobilized to ambush a large Soviet military convoy comprised of mobile ICBM launchers. With the backdrop of a frozen Soviet Wilderness, an MI6 Squadron are ready to combat any Spetsnaz forces in order to secure the top-secret intel held on the convoy, as well as any necessary supplies for future operations. Use tanks to blow up enemy positions or snowmobiles to zip behind the enemy and break their lines.
• Miami: Through hired DGI forces, Perseus ambushed and assaulted a prison transport in Miami's famed South Beach in order to free a trusted ally. Amid the cover of the night amongst vibrant art-deco architecture and neon lights, CIA special forces have been dispatched to eliminate remaining DGI forces and identify clues to Perseus' whereabouts.
• Moscow: In the heart of the U.S.S.R, a Spetsnaz squad was sent to a compromised CIA safe house in order to secure the area, capture any remaining CIA operatives, and acquire further intel on NATO's future plans. Initial reports indicate that the area has gone hot and fighting has spilt out into the streets, prompting a second CIA-JSOC team to arrive at the scene as reinforcements.
• Satellite: Deep in the deserts of Angola, Central Africa, a top-secret, American-made reconnaissance satellite known as the KH-9 has been grounded, potentially by Perseus. Hired DGI forces are searching for the sensitive intel it holds, while NATO's MI6 Squadron have been dispatched to secure the site and eliminate DGI stragglers.

You can expect the return of game modes such as Control, Domination, Kill Confirmed Search and Destroy, along with Team Deathmatch. You can also expect new modes such as Combined Arms, Fireteam, and VIP Escort.

Combined Arms find you in 12v12 battle with vehicles and can be played across a handful of Combined Arms Modes, including Domination, which places multiple flags around a given map for teams to capture and defend.

VIP Escort is exactly how it sounds. In the 6v6 mode, you will be tasked with leading another player, designated as the VIP, to safety. You can also win this mode by taking out the opposing team. A non-VIP who dies during the round is out until the next one, but a downed player at zero health can defend themselves in the Last Stand or be revived by a teammate.

Then, there's Fireteam, a new 40-player mode with up to 10 teams of four, where the action is centred around operators and the environment they battle in. The first available Fireteam game type is called Dirty Bomb, and more information on it will be detailed at a later date.

Scorestreaks make a return with several significant changes. In this new system, the earned score is kept through death. Scorestreaks and especially higher-end rewards, must "still be earned through earning plenty of score via elite gameplay."

Those who string together multiple kills before death will earn streak score bonuses, and will have cooldowns, preventing players from "spamming" Scorestreaks repeatedly.

Along with the aforementioned, you can also expect four refinements to movement:

• Sprint Take Off – Operators automatically receive a burst of speed when starting a sprint, then settle down to normal sprint speed.
• Sliding – Slides start and end in a crouched position for a more believable movement pattern.
• Footstep Control – Faster movement makes more noise, while slower movement doesn't make as much sound. Players can further reduce the sound of their footsteps with the return of the classic Ninja Perk.
• Jumping – Expect more natural height in jumps, which briefly slows an operator down as they land.

You can also expect a new weapon sound engine brings which will give you a sense of what is being fired at you and where it came from.

There's also the Create-a-Class system which is now slot-based, and Field Upgrades which are are in-game items that either "help your squad or hinder your enemies," and can be earned in time in-game with a cooldown that lasts after death.

Loadouts can also be outfitted with class-changing Wildcards, which can provide one of four benefits:

• Grant eight attachments for a primary weapon
• Carry up to six Perks
• Double the number of lethal and tactical equipment given on spawn
• Carry three Perks from any category, rather than be limited to one of each

If you want to customize your primary or some secondary weapons, you can head over to the Gunsmith. Each primary weapon can be customized with up to 54 attachments across eight different nodes, or attachment points, with at least six options per, attach point. The benefits and not so beneficial information for each attachment will be shown via percentage change.

Out November 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will support cross-platform and cross-generation play as well as cross-progression for every available platform including PC, where Beenox is the lead developer.
