The post provides a timely snapshot of a significant political event, but it could benefit from more analysis or context about the implications of the vote. It is relevant but somewhat lacks depth and detail to fully inform the community.

Conservative MPs are voting on whether to keep Boris Johnson as leader.

If Johnson loses, he will be forced to stand down as PM.

The confidence vote follows anger over Sue Gray's report detailing lockdown rule-breaking in Downing Street

Most of the cabinet say they will support him - but former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says he should go

"I'll win for you again," Johnson told MPs in a private meeting before the vote

139 have publicly aired their support. Given many won't use social media and a few will go public but vote the other way, you can't help but think he's won.

The vote of confidence began at 18:00 BST, and is due to end at 20:00 - with a result at 21:00

If Boris Johnson were deposed, who would Conservative members want to succeed him?

Ben Wallace: 12%
Liz Truss: 11%
Jeremy Hunt: 10%
Penny Mordaunt: 8%
Rishi Sunak / Michael Gove: =7%
Priti Patel: 6%
Tom Tugendhat/Nadhim Zahawi: =5%
Dominic Raab: 4%

Right now, the only reason I'd like to see Boris remain is the fact he has done an outstanding job in supporting Ukraine in their war against Russia but I'm not sure that is enough to keep him in power.

I don't think there is even a 1% chance Boris loses this. No way.

Boris Johnson has survived the confidence vote in his leadership by 211 votes to 148.

But Mr Johnson suffered a big rebellion as more than 40% of his own MPs said they have no confidence in his leadership.

The PM won by a majority of just 63 votes.

41% of his own party have no confidence in him. I'd be surprised if he is still the Prime Minister after the By-Elections at the end of June.

More turmoil in the government tonight with the Chancellor and Health Secretary both resigning along with a whole lot of other non-cabinet ministers. It looks very much like the end is coming for Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.

SUMMARY

  • Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid quit Boris Johnson's cabinet, piling pressure on the PM
  • Sunak says the public expect "government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously"
  • Health Secretary Javid tells the PM he can "no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this government"
  • Both men quit after Johnson apologised for appointing a Tory MP to his government who had faced allegations of sexual misconduct
  • Tory party vice-chair Bim Afolami quits live on TV but many in the Cabinet express support for the PM
  • Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer says it's "clear the government is now collapsing" and says he would back an early election
  • The PM won a vote of confidence in his leadership last month though faced a big rebellion
  • He is protected from a further vote for a year - but some MPs have called for the rules to be changed to oust him

Not one of them has an ounce of integrity. For months and months, this shit has gone on.

I think Boris will be gone by the weekend if not sooner

I'd be shocked if he was still Prime Minister in the morning. His position is untenable.

I think the vultures have been waiting and circling since the confidence vote and the Pincher debacle was what they needed to go for the kill.

Why don't Labour/opposition parties call a vote of no confidence? If the Tories lose it goes to a general election, I think?
