Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are the last two candidates to succeed Boris Johnson as the next Tory party leader and prime minister after Penny Mordaunt was knocked out in the final Conservative MPs' vote
  • In the space of eight days, Tory MPs have whittled down a field of eight candidates to the final two - Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss
  • The decision on which of them becomes party leader and the country's next prime minister now goes to Conservative members across the country. They are thought to number more than 160,000, around 0.3% of the total electorate
  • On Monday Sunak and Truss will take part in a live TV debate, which will be broadcast on BBC One at 21:00; Sky News will also host a live debate on 4 August
  • A total of 12 hustings events have been scheduled across the UK; the first will take place in Leeds on 28 July
  • Ballot papers will begin landing on members' doorsteps from 1 August
  • Votes can be cast by post or online. The deadline is 17:00 on 2 September
  • The result will be declared on 5 September
  • The following day, 6 September, Boris Johnson will go to see the Queen to resign as prime minister. His successor will be appointed a few minutes later

I am shaking my head in disbelief that Liz Truss, I say again Liz Truss will probably be PM. A loon and loose cannon - oh well nothing changes from Boris

Either will make a shocking PM, but still, be an improvement on Johnson. Probably on a par with May.

Sky News have Truss as the favourite and Truss, Badenoch and Mordaunt were all favoured over Sunak in a recent poll of Tory members.

Beyond flabbergasted that Truss could be PM.

Don't think Sunak would be any good either though!

It's an inspirational message for young girls that no matter how untalented you are, you too could one day become Prime Minister.

I don't like Rishi Sunak but I'd far rather see him as PM than Truss. I genuinely feel she's a dangerous liability that would be a risk to the UK on the world stage.

These are both shite. But Sunak is far superior. Truss would be out of her depth running a small village primary school

Only watched little bits of today's TV debate.

Sunak is clever. He is playing to the Tory membership. Lots of use of the words "Conservative values".

Truss is campaigning like she is wanting to win votes from the wider population by talking about her Comprehensive education.

Only the Tory membership have a say.....

If she hasn't realised that... I'm concerned about her as a potential PM

Most of the night Sunak went on about Conservative values. That's what members of the party want to hear. They're the ones who can vote.

Truss seemed to be playing to the wider electorate who can't vote anyway.

It was a very poor "debate". Especially when they wasted time talking about his suit and her earrings.

Close call between two very very poor and unconvincing options. Surely even the Tories have better people among them than those two.
