Update:

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-reigning monarch, has died at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace has announced.

In a statement Buckingham Palace said:

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Our reactions to this news starts here

-----------------------------------------------

The Queen is under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned for her health, Buckingham Palace said.

A statement reads: "Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.

I imagine she's under constant medical supervision, this announcement may be preparing us for bad news

That's exactly what I was thinking as well.

She looked unbelievable frail in that photo the other day

I think there is a sense of inevitably about this news.

I suspect if it isn't today it will be within the next couple of days at the latest given the speed with which the family are gathering

Sadly, it does sound pretty ominous.

Will be a sad moment when she does pass away whatever you think of the Monarchy. She has been one constant throughout our lives (and the lives of our parents and grandparents)

All the family are gathering at Balmoral now.

This is very serious and the end seems very near.

Does look increasingly likely that this is the last day of the Queen's life.

She's someone's mother, grandmother, great grandmother and for that there is sympathy but I'd be a hypocrite if I was to say her death (whenever that is) bothered me in anyway. As it I won't.

I'm no fan of the Monarchy but I genuinely feel really sad about this.

I wouldn't be surprised if she has already died and they are just waiting for all the family to be at Balmoral before announcing it.

A day we all knew would come yet now its here its still a shock. A large part of our entire nation's identity is about to be lost.

I'm not a huge royalist but like most on here, she's been our Queen for since we were born and longer before. I'll miss her when the inevitable happens. New money won't have her face on, stamps, shields etc. she'd always been there and for the most part had a decent sense of humour (I know it wasn't her, but the old spitting image used to crack me up too)

I don't really associate the rest of the family as 'Royals', as there's always been some controversy around them but to me she is the Royal.
