The new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has outlined her plans to deal with soaring energy bills faced by households and businesses.

At its heart is a move to limit the 80% rise in domestic bills that was earmarked for October.

What's been announced today?

With the debate drawing to a close, here are the main lines from Liz Truss' announcement on energy bills.

As expected, an energy bills price cap of £2,500 for the typical household per year, for the next two years, has been announced.

A six-month support package for businesses has also been announced, with further support for "vulnerable industries" after that period.

The ban on fracking will also be lifted - allowing developers to seek planning permissions where there is local support.

How much will I pay?

You will still pay for the gas and electricity you use. But the government's Energy Price Guarantee will limit the price that suppliers can charge for each unit of energy.

For a typical household - one that uses 12,000 kWh (kilowatt hours) of gas a year, and 2,900 kWh of electricity a year - it means an annual bill will not rise above £2,500 from October. Without this intervention, that annual bill would have been £3,549 a year. Last winter it was £1,277 a year.

However, if you use more gas or electricity than that, you will pay more.

This guarantee will last for two years.

I've turned the smart meter face down as it's more stress than it's worth. Got a little one too so it is hard to cut corners but we've been managing by putting the heating on for an hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening topped up by using an oil-filled radiator during the day.

I work from home as well so a hot water bottle has kept me warm

Nov 25th - Dec 25th

£359 in gas
£139 in electric

I gave up trying to conserve energy as was fighting a losing battle against wife and kids.

Think it's hit home a bit as they all have jumpers on!

Thankfully, most of that is covered by credit and the government help.

What is everyone using on a daily basis?

This month I've noticed we are using roughly £5 per day on (electricity/gas combined), our smart meter always starts off at £1.09 which I assume is the daily standing charge for both combined. I don't think we have every been as high as £5 per day before.

According to my smart meter I'm roughly using £4.65 per day combined (including daily standing charges).

I've never been this high for daily costs.

I'm trying to cut out using my oven/hob for cooking as it is adding about 90p per day to the cost 😕
