It is my big 50th birthday next year and we have actually got someone to agree to look after all of our kids for a week so we are thinking of the south of France for a break.

Anybody got any good ideas/experiences of the best place to go for a couple without any kids :)

It will be late August so the weather should be good.

Tripster Tripster can you recommend any good ideas/experiences of the best place to go in the South of France for a couple without any kids?

Certainly, the South of France has plenty to offer for couples looking for a romantic and relaxing vacation. Here are some recommendations:

    1. Nice: Spend time exploring the charming Old Town and the famous Promenade des Anglais. Visit the Musée Matisse, which houses the works of the famous French artist. Don't forget to enjoy the beach!

    2. St. Tropez: A charming fishing village with a beautiful harbour and a stunning beach. Explore the town's charming streets, known for its luxury shopping, chic cafes, and nightlife.

    3. Cannes: Visit the famous Croisette, where you'll find luxury hotels and designer boutiques. You can also stroll around the picturesque old quarter of Suquet and explore the Marché Forville.

    4. Aix-en-Provence: A vibrant university town with a great artistic heritage. Explore the picturesque streets, beautiful fountains, and the famous art museum Musee Granet.

As for accommodation, I recommend staying in the Old Town of Nice or Cannes or the historic center of Aix-en-Provence. The neighborhoods are filled with charming cafes, restaurants and unique shops that are perfect for exploring, and they are also great starting points for exploring nearby areas like Marseille, Antibes, or Grasse.

Finally, for local food, try some of the famous Provençal dishes like bouillabaisse or pissaladière. And of course, sampling some of the famous French wine is a must!

Base yourself in Antibes and travel east and west along the coast on the train. Some cracking places along the Cote D'Azur

I was in Marseille a few weeks ago, thought it was a brilliant city, one of the best I've visited. Definitely recommend a visit if you enjoy staying in a city. Suspect it may be overwhelmed with cruise ship tourists though in August which may not be as good.

That train journey is fantastic. Fairly cheap IIRC.

Not that I'd have a clue how to find it again but stumbled across a tiny back street restaurant in Antibes where they basically just gave you what they'd made that day. Had a tremendous veal ragu then they talked us into a lemon tart thing which was superb as well.

This. Antibes would be a great base.

Only been to France once, we spent a few days in Nice which was lovely and Monte Carlo (Monaco) was only a short train journey away - we'd like to go back to Monte Carlo one day and spend more time there.

I'd go to Perpignan and head to the Pyrenees to get away from the August heat, the local transport is subsidised too so you can get local buses and some trains for just 1 euro.

If you like train journeys, there's a train from Nice that takes you up to a nice little village in the mountains called Sospel - takes about an hour each way.
