I was in Marseille a few weeks ago, thought it was a brilliant city, one of the best I've visited. Definitely recommend a visit if you enjoy staying in a city. Suspect it may be overwhelmed with cruise ship tourists though in August which may not be as good.

That train journey is fantastic. Fairly cheap IIRC.

Not that I'd have a clue how to find it again but stumbled across a tiny back street restaurant in Antibes where they basically just gave you what they'd made that day. Had a tremendous veal ragu then they talked us into a lemon tart thing which was superb as well.

Only been to France once, we spent a few days in Nice which was lovely and Monte Carlo (Monaco) was only a short train journey away - we'd like to go back to Monte Carlo one day and spend more time there.

I'd go to Perpignan and head to the Pyrenees to get away from the August heat, the local transport is subsidised too so you can get local buses and some trains for just 1 euro.

If you like train journeys, there's a train from Nice that takes you up to a nice little village in the mountains called Sospel - takes about an hour each way.
