I think they had to be the first to go, considering where Perez is too - he will still be a massive tool to them. (if the Mercedes do pit of course)

Verstappen needs to cool it a bit. No point taking life out of the tyres early. Can make a second a lap easily enough and there's always a chance of a Safety Car closing the field up anyway.

Max closing the gap very well, that on-board also shows minimal to no wear on his front left.
